When a passenger requests a pickup from a ride-share service, the app pings a nearby driver, who can accept or decline the trip. All drivers in a market charge the same rate: in Chicago last year, the base fare for UberX was $1.70, plus $.20 per minute and $.95 per mile. Its a transparent system that seems perfectly designed to eliminate disparities in how much male and female drivers can earnright?
Not quite, according to research coauthored by John List, the Kenneth C. Griffin Distinguished Service Professor in Economics and the College, and collaborators at Stanford and Uber.

“after six months, more than 76 percent of women quit driving for Uber, versus 65 percent of men.”
Grammar Alert!
On average, women drive slower, work fewer hours, and have less route knowledge than men in the same job. There is no disparity other than skill set and work ethic.
But the point is that at the end of the article, it was still the men’s fault that women were not earning as much. The men were not picking up their children at the day care, they were making the women do it, thereby keeping the women from spending as much time driving and gaining experience.
It is still the men’s fault.
Human nature is pretty hard wired. One of the weirdest things the left does is the ongoing effort to erase the notion that there are differences in the TWO genders. I consider these differences one of Gods gifts and these morons want to believe they don’t exist. Madness.
So in other words its sexist that women as a group are paid less based entirely upon different work ethic. They need to be paid the same no matter what.
I defy anyone to earn money on Uber, lol! My husband did it during a bad time in our financial life and he never made much money driving around 8 hours at night. Then a deer hit our car and we were in the hole for that! I told him to hang it up.
Women do drive slower than men and it is dangerous for a woman, alone on the road, late at night. I wouldn’t do it.
I
My bad.
Off topic, but I never understood Uber. Why would you call Uber when you can call a cab? Isn’t Uber just a taxi service which uses an app on a cellular phone?
More reliable during the rush hour and during storms. No tipping, either. My husband says there are add ons like surcharges that people may not be aware of.
IOW on average men work harder and smarter, and don’t quit as often, and therefore make more money given the same opportunity. How sexist.
In the suburbs I can call an uber and have it be here in 5 minutes. Lucky to get a cab within an hour if it even shows up. You know what fare is going to be when you call it, there is a record of who picked you and there is no need for cash
Thanks for info. I rarely need a ride, but when I have called for a ride, I’ve always called a cab, never Uber.
Because driving speed of half a mile less per hour makes such a difference. Not.
Perhaps women take one look at drunk men and just say no.
They come to you - wherever you are, you don’t have to flag them down and (from my experience) they cost about half as much. It’s a flat rate - they take you the absolute best route they can whereas there is an incentive for the cabbie to drive you a round a bit. I don’t know how much that happens but I’ve had my suspicions before.
I thought uber drivers bid against each other. Did that change or am I wrong?
