'Supergirl' Casting a Transgender Character for Season Four

The CW's Supergirl is casting a transgender character who will play a significant role in the DC Comics-based show's upcoming fourth season, ComicBook.com has learned from multiple sources.

This news originates in a casting notice for a character called “Nia Nal,” described as a transgender woman in her early 20s. The character is being cast with open ethnicity, meaning that they do not have a specific ethnic background in mind. She may be positioned to take over the newsroom, as she comes in with a strong journalism background a la Snapper Carr and is described as a “young Cat Grant type.”

Ironically, Cat Grant left the news industry to work in government, serving as press secretary to President Olivia Marsdin.

According to the casting call obtained by ComicBook.com, Jia will be “a confident, wunderkind of a fashionista. Once a political speechwriter, Nia is the newest addition to the CatCo investigative reporting team. With her she brings sparlking wit and biting humor but under that banter-y, chic facade, lays a soulful young woman who has much to offer the world.”

Ouch, Scorpion’s been cancelled? Well, that’s a bummer, especially after they left a lot of plot threads hanging (namely, that psycho former member is still on the loose, and then there’s the ambiguous fate of the team in the finale). Then again, I was horrified by the last few moments of the season finale (probably the only other time that left me disturbed was the penultimate episode of the first season, and that at least managed to clean things up).

Truly a shame, since that series definitely allowed me to be a bit more trusting of intelligence after people like Sartre and how they’re pushed as smart (not to mention some truly awful college professors) ruined that trust.

Well, to be fair, Green Martian did seem pretty alpha himself, and he wasn’t a bad guy (though he WAS depicted initially in an ambiguous light in Season 1).

I like the SciFi genre and can put up with a lot of PC crap but Super Girl was too much for me. I stopped watching early in season two. Jessica Jones almost lost me too but the story was pretty good and I love Krysten Ritter. If she is in it, it is worth watching.

Yeah, no kidding regarding Alex and Maggie. I knew Maggie was going to be a lesbian since she was already that in the comics, but turning Alex into a lesbian was way beyond the pale, especially when I never got any indication that she was that in season 1 (if anything, it was strongly implied if not directly shown that she was straight). What’s even worse is that I discovered this first from TVTropes where the YMMV section of the show actually DID indicate that Alex was a lesbian before she even met Maggie, let alone “came out” (in fact, I think this was before the season even aired). It’s actually one of the reasons I quit the show myself, that alongside their shilling for Hillary Clinton, their obviously trying to paint Donald Trump as a fascist via various characters, their demonizing anyone with concern for national borders via Cadmus (which is odd, since the DEO in season 1 had a similar role to the ICE/Border Patrol), the stupid Daxamite-Kryptonian feud that was introduced, and heck, pretty much a whole lot of bad plots abound.

Personally, I would have kept Alex straight. At least Maggie was actually a lesbian in the comics originally (well, kind of, originally they didn’t indicate that she was a lesbian, but then during I think the 1990s they decided to make her one). She might be friends with Maggie, but nothing more than that in my rendition. It’s actually a bit ironic, really, considering her actress is a committed Christian and married to Nathan West, not to mention has kids (I think they’re definitely going to have a very difficult time explaining to their kids what happened to Alex’s character).

For a guy who can alter his molecular density, shape-shift, fly, is an extremely powerful telepath and has super-strength; he is frequently a non-factor in most combat situations.
