NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Name a person who hasnt imagined finding a buried treasure.
Well, that childhood dream turned into reality for a Staten Island couple recently, CBS2s Jenna DeAngelis reported Monday.
But what they did after they got their hands on the treasure is the most surprising part of this story.
The Emanuels discovered a silver box in their own yard, but for years never paid it much mind. They simply thought the box at the base of some trees was nothing more than a cable box. However, when they went to replace the trees on the side of their home they learned a surprising truth.

Thanks for posting . . .so refreshing to have a positive story with nice people for a change.
Interesting ending. Story doesn’t reveal whether the neighbors paid the people a reward. I would expect something considering the valuables were worth $52k
Whorealdo is on the way.
Wow, and no federal pencilnecks got involved? Surprising. Thanks Extremely Extreme Extremist.
I believe the rotting money can be replaced/exchanged so long as the denominations can be discerned. What I don’t understand is why the condition was as bad as it was inside the safe.
Not really a safe, just an expensive lock box. I went to a fire, as a cop, which had an old ammo box crammed with money and was charred almost beyond recognition. The poor old woman who had been burnt out struck a chord with me, so I took three days of vacation and traveled to DC to the IRS offices. They looked at the ashes, said “No problem.” They weighed the stuff, treated the ashes and did other stuff. They returned $36,000 to the widow who loved me like a Grandma to her dying day.
