San Franciscos mayor plans to put medical teams on the streets to distribute a drug that curbs heroin cravings in opioid addicts, an initiative he says will be the first in the country.
Mayor Mark Farrell announced Thursday he will allocate $6 million for 10 new public health clinicians to provide the opioid treatment medicine buprenorphine, known as Suboxone, directly to users.
Buprenorphine is a daily pill or dissolvable strip that reduces cravings and alleviates withdrawal symptoms. It also reduces risk of overdose.
Video and photos of people shooting up drugs in public have gone viral in recent weeks and added to San Franciscos reputation as being overrun by addicts and homeless people.
The opioid crisis plaguing our country is alive and visible on the streets of San Francisco. The status quo is simply unacceptable, Farrell said.

Wow..you really are a sicko.
Probably are pro abortion and euthanasia too for Defectives.
Another moronic, uneducated comment...devoid of medical knowledge.
Suboxxone has few side effects when administered correctly.
Your comment is one of the few that is compassionate and is trying to understand how we can save lives and help people recover their lives,
keep paying folks...it will never end....
liberals like social chaos because it means MORE GOVT JOBS and MORE GOVT LAKEYS who will vote to keep the rats in so they can continue their lackey job....
And, more kickbacks from the drug companies.
Hey, stupid. You have me confused with someone who cares what you think. Go back to demoRATic underground.
My cat was on buprenorphine for a week or so this spring - seriously. She was recovering from surgery to remove a cherry pit size bladder stone - can you imagine something that large in an animal that small?
She seems to have made a complete recovery. I say seems because the cystotomy was only two weeks after she had, had eight molars extracted - rampant gingivitis - and the cystotomy was followed by a bladder infection.
Grim times. :-(
we'd like to think positive but the success rate was very very small...
Oooooo...scary.
The only thing I hate worse than kommiefornians is libertarian trash. Kommiefornians infect civilization. Libertarians infect FR. You disgust me.
Whats the Difference between Subutex and Suboxone? ...Suboxone contains both buprenorphine and naloxone, whereas Subutex contains only buprenorphine. [Subutex vs Suboxone]
Thanks Olog-hai.
The ones who live longest tend to get with the program by jumping in with both feet, using "medical science" to get through the weaning process and developing a solid relationship with God and helping others with similar problems....I've attended half a dozen funerals from Methadone ODs and that's just the ones I got close to.
Everyone trying to recover has about a 1,000 similarities to others in the same straits and they also have enough personality differences that they have to find what works for them - but they have to be willing to work their asses off instead of trusting their lives to long-term drug replacement regimens - it keeps up the ingrained habit of taking something on a regular basis to keep from withdrawal.
Good luck with your own recovery - hope it is long and prosperous.
Yeah, they will let them die still, but make a few bucks at it.
