I wish I had the “Bible Lands” columns in a book I could take on the treadmill. The series seems to cover roughly the same ground as Gertrude Bell’s “The Desert and the Sown,” published about 50 years after.

On page 11, there’s a small ad for “Bass’s East India Pale Ale” which seems very contemporary: I think Bill the Son drinks that.

Interesting read on allowing citizenship for Chinese.
While I certainly understand the concern over diversity, I totally object to the statement that the Constitution clearly denies citizenship to blacks or Chinese. It says no such thing.

I wonder what clause they believe denies citizenship to negroes and Chinese and if the matter was clarified by the Civil War amendments.

Perhaps they're relying on the interpretation in the Dred Scott case, which held that a black person has no legal rights. The "reasoning" in that case could be applied to Chinese easily enough.

That’s right. The answer to my question no doubt lies in my posts from last year when the Dred Scott decision was handed down.

But the article actually states that the Constitution clearly states so.
There is nothing about that in the Constitution.
And the Dred Scott is mentioned separately, but not as if it quoted the Constitution where it says no negroes or Chinese...or FTM that only white people are allowed.

And they never had to place a shield over the front cover at the checkout stand.
To: the OlLine Rebel
I suggest the article is simply in error. Perhaps the writer hasn't actually read the Constitution and simply believes it contains this provision, based on his knowledge of the
Dred Scott ruling. It's similar to belief in the Constitution's granting a "right to abortion" based on
Roe v. Wade, even though the Constitution says absolutely nothing even remotely to that effect.
Penumbras and emanations.

May 20. . . . Suicide of Herbert (Frank Forester), an ancient sporting pal of Tom Griffing and Fred Anthon, whose brother Phil all but witnessed the act. Herbert was an uncommonly poor devil but a man of very scholarly culture, and there are elements of profoundest tragedy in the transaction.*
The ambrosial Hurlbut has gone to Europe at last.
*Henry William Herbert (1807-1858), prolific and talented English-born writer, now best remembered for his books on field sports and horses, had made an unhappy marriage, and been deserted by his wife.

Very sad.
Henry William Herbert Wikipedia page.
"He was staying at the Stevens Hotel in Manhattan, New York City and invited several men to dine with him on what would be the last night of his life. Only one gentleman accepted his invention, Philip Hone Anthon, a pupil of Herbert's, who most likely accepted the invitation due to Herbert's plea that he was very lonely, after which he begged Anthon to spend as much time as possible with him. Herbert took his own life on 17 May 1858 at 2:00 am."

Edgar Allan Poe felt that he was "not unapt to fall into pompous grandiloquence" and sometimes was "woefully turgid", while others saw his novels as "prolix, lacking in imagination and humor."Yeah, well, Edgar, takes one to know one.
I checked a mystery novel out of the library the other day which features E.A. Poe detecting along with his character Auguste Dupin. Haven't started it yet.
