GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. A 5-year-old girl suffered serious injuries after she was attacked by a bear overnight in east Orchard Mesa.
The girl had gone outside around 2:30 a.m. early Sunday to investigate noises she thought were being made by her dog, the girls mother told Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers.
But the girls mother heard her daughter screaming and went outside to see a large black bear dragging her daughter, CPW officials said. The bear dropped the girl after her mother screamed at it. Their home is in the east Orchard Mesa area, above the Colorado River corridor, officials said.
The girl was transported to St. Marys Medical Center in Grand Junction with serious injuries, CPW said. Radio traffic from first responders said she had been bitten on her back and near her head.

“Yes, but they are all members of the black bear family, which comes in all those color phases.”
A few years back, in Idaho, we saw a sow with two cubs that I first mistook for grizzly.
In Idaho it could be a grizzly. The black bears lack the shoulder hump.
Yep, there are wild animals out so at least be prepared.
I was thrown off by the color. After a careful look, the sow just wasn’t burly enough to be a grizzly.
Yes, I guess I thought that was implied. Thanks for clarifying.
Didn’t intend to imply anything. Some don’t know that.
