California grid operator sees tight power supplies for summer

Reuters) - California's electric grid operator has forecast power supplies will be tight this summer due to below average hydropower production and reduced generation, according to an assessment released on Wednesday.

The California Independent System Operator (ISO), the grid operator, said the system's capacity to serve consumers will be tight in high-load periods in the summer months, especially during the evenings of hot days when solar power dissipates.

Wait a second, I thought California was generating so much energy from renewable sources that they were having to pay others to take their energy.

Am I missing something? Or is it just the inability to store the energy, causing them to dump it?

Putting any trust whatsoever in technology with at most 30 percent efficiency is stupid at best. So called renewables are great at producing energy at the very times and places it is NOT needed. So in the interest of 30 percent efficiency, we should change our entire energy production model with the California PC model designed to crash at the very moment of greatest need.

Forest Gump would not be so stupid, but California can be counted on.

As the Leftists say when they were wrong and we were right: that’s unexpected.

Solar doesn't work at night? Who'd a thunk it?

WHAT??!! In the La La Land of Renewable Energy the power supplies won’t be sufficient? This must be fake news. They claim the illegals make them great so there is no way they don’t have the most up to date power grid.

(sarc/off)

Dissipates , any alternative to coal, oil and gas generated power is worthless without storage (batteries.) Yet even with that it takes a long time to recoup the investment and you need to maintain the entire system along with the fact that you will always put some money back in to keep it working as efficiently as possible . California and its citizens have to be some of the most idiotic and helpless dolts to let their state government allow such overall power to let this even happen , I have no empathy for any of them . This is all self-imposed .

A modern day Marie Antoinette might say . . . ‘let them eat solar panels’.

On another note, how much more energy is used to run the air conditioners more because the temperatures around all those solar farms and panels raise the measured levels of heat?

California should just build some shiny new NUCLEAR power plants... oh wait. Sarcasm off.

Too bad, I guess California and its moon beam governor will just have to stew in their crazy, moon-bat, liberal anti-energy policy juices.

And the socialists just keep letting the illegals pour into the state putting more and more strain on all utilities and water.

This happens every summer. It’s a real bolt from the blue to the geniuses who run the state that it gets hot in the summer and people use their air conditioning. Ran us $1000/month when we lived in Palm Desert.

We weren’t really interested in lectures about how to conserve during peak hours when it was 115 outside.

Easy fix; have Gov. Moonbeam pass a law saying that solar panels will have to produce energy at night, too. That’s how things work, right???

Wow...my FIL and MIL were prescient. They moved from Thousand Oaks, CA last month to CDA area of Idaho. FIL said 2018 will be THE year of long, rolling blackouts in CA. He was a GC and worked closely with Cal Edison on big commercial projects. Shutting down the two nuke plants was a death rattle for CA energy...and solar/wind can’t make it up.

Sympathies for the millions of normal Americans in CA but the rest can swelter their dumbasses off. It will be good prep for hell.

Is this going to be another liberal example of unintended consequences caused by their insane liberal agenda?

Blue state communists in action.

This is like the progressive/communists in MA getting LNG from Russia, because they don’t like pipelines from Appalachia. Or MD not allowing a pipeline from PA to the eastern panhandle in WV. It will stay in WV now.

They are limiting resources so residents will pay more.

Well, clearly they need to.paint more streets white and criminalize use of air conditioning.
