Seventeen people in northwest Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have died from Ebola, the health ministry said on Tuesday,
describing the fresh outbreak as a "public health emergency with international impact."

"Twenty-one cases of fever with haemorrhagic indications and 17 deaths" have been recorded in Equateur province,
it said, citing a notification to the ministry as of May 3.

It is the DRC's ninth known outbreak of Ebola since 1976, when the deady viral disease was first identified in then-Zaire by a Belgian-led team.

The virus is handed on by contact with bodily fluids -- touching a sick or dead person is a well-known source of infection.

Following an incubation period of between two and 21 days, Ebola develops into a high fever,
weakness, intense muscle and joint pain, headaches and a sore throat.

The Ebola outbreak that struck West Africa in 2014-2016, killed more than 11,300 people and infected an estimated 29,000,
mainly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

I read on reddit that over 3000 recent refugees have come from the Congo.

Ummm...why?

Cowgirl of Justice :" I read on reddit that over 3000 recent refugees have come from the Congo."

I would think a reoccurring infectious viral disease can motivate people to relocate to another country.
The first to leave are generally the wealthy, political officials, and then the intelligentsia.
The poor and the ignorant are generally disproportionally affected.

I guess they’ll be sending them to the U.S. to prevent any other locals from getting Ebola. America is the sanitation landfill (dump) to the world. Got garbage? Dump it here.

These outbreaks move fast. (I believe that yesterday, it was 2 dead, today 17.)

Safest to tighten down travel from there right away.

Quarantine.

FlingWingFlyer :" I guess they’ll be sending them to the U.S. to prevent any other locals from getting Ebola."

Previously, under the Obama administration, Ebola infected patients were air-lifted to the U.S. mainland
as there were many healthcare professionals who, unexpectedly, contracted the disease.
Subsequent study revealed that the Ebola virus had either changed, or the sample that the CDC secured in 1977 was tainted.
It is believed that the 1977 sample may have been damaged 'in transit', and thus the CDC sample studies were of a weakened strain of the disease.
As a result of studying a recent sample, the medical standards which had been in place for several years, were modified and upgraded.
Current policy is to train healthcare professionals and then send them to infected areas in order to contain and eliminate the disease.

Quarantine is the most effective way to contain the disease from further spreading.
True that !
However, many of those who live within the quarantine area panic at the thought of being medically and socially isolated.

Bring Out Your Dead

Post to me or FReep mail to be on/off the Bring Out Your Dead ping list.

The purpose of the “Bring Out Your Dead” ping list (formerly the “Ebola” ping list) is very early warning of emerging pandemics, as such it has a high false positive rate.

So far the false positive rate is 100%.

At some point we may well have a high mortality pandemic, and likely as not the “Bring Out Your Dead” threads will miss the beginning entirely.

*sigh* Such is life, and death...

If a quarantine saves just one child's life, it's worth it.

Not necessarily cancel your walking/foodie tour of the Congo, but if you partake of 'bush meat',
be prepared to stay for a long,.. long, ..long time !
You might want to pack your luggage accordingly.

The well concealed secret about the Ebola epidemic in West Africa in 2014, was that it is not that contagious. I know two people that went there to help get it under control, one of which was there 5 times. Sexual transmission is the number one way Ebola is spread in West Africa. This was new information for me and something I have not seen in the open literature.
