A mother and her young children were killed after crashing into an alligator on a South Carolina stretch of interstate, according to the coroner's office.

Amber Stanley, 24, her 4-year-old son Jack, and her 2-year-old daughter Autumn all died in the wreck, according to Sean D. Fogle, the Chief Deputy Coroner with the Orangeburg County Coroner's Office.

Stanley and her children all died of thermal injuries due to the vehicle fire, Fogle reported. They were from Callahan, Fla., a town located northwest of Jacksonville, according to the coroner.

The incident occurred when the vehicle Stanley was driving struck an alligator that was crossing I-95, Fogle said.

The crash happened just before 1 a.m. on a northbound lane of I-95, near mile marker 86, according to Lance Cpl. Judd Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Stanley's 2011 Kia Soul went off the left side of the road and into the median, where it hit a tree and caught fire, Jones said.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.

I’m sure that would work out well.

For those who can afford them.

When my daughter started driving I put her in a Hummer H 3. Lots of protection and slow. It was a great car and ended up saving her life.

I bet parking was a problem.

I have a 2013 Soul. Good mileage, easy to park, but I wouldn’t like to take on a gator. RIP to those who died.

Wow! Same thing happened to me in late 1977. It was in the winter and I was coming around Harrisburg, PA on I-81. Huge dead buck in the left lane and I had no choice but to drive right over it...in a Pontiac Catalina, of all things - huge car. Well, drove right over it, bumped the car around, yet it stayed stable. But then the car wouldn’t accelerate which was scary. I turned on the inside light to see that the gear shift was knocked into neutral. Put it back in drive and off I went. Was like I was driving a tank!

There was a story of an 11.5 foot gator being hit by an 18 wheeler the other day. It just made the gator mad.

Horrible. Praying that surviving family members can get through this tragedy with strength and courage.

Two things to swerve to avoid... Hogs and Gators. They are heavy and low profile. You hit them odds are your vehicle is going airborn.

I don’t swerve to avoid Deer. Most of the time they just break things. Beats losing control by trying to avoid them Unless they are already laying in the road.

A good reporter would inform the public of how the alligator fared. Alas that information is not forthcoming.

I once ran over a badger. I was in my minivan, oddly everything was fine.

Stanley's 2011 Kia Soul

Is that the size of a Yugo?

It’s threads like these that remind me to keep my family in big cars. Bigger is better in a collision with anything.

Screw the environment.

I would think the Kia Soul had similar ground clearance issues to my case.

No. The Kia would have way more ground clearance. The 914 has about 3"-4". I've measured it.

Not many Americans have survived hitting a camel with a car in Saudi. Camel dies but so does the American driver.

Don’t know about serving but according to another article they
hit the gator...

snip
A 2011 Kia Soul was traveling north on I-95 when the car hit
an animal in the roadway, Jones said. The car went off the left
side of the road and into the median, where it hit a tree and
caught fire.

Late one night I was driving home when I saw what looked like a big log in the road. I turned a little to the left to miss it, but it moved. It wasn't a log, it was a huge gator. I ran over it, and my truck bounced up twice off the road. I pulled over and grabbed a flashlight and my 22lr I keep in the truck. Fortunately, it was dead. The guy behind me pulled over to check if I was ok. The young man offered me help loading the gator into my truck, but I said that he could have the gator.

The young man told me that a gator that big was worth a lot of money, and he was more than willing to share it with me. GOD spoke to me, let him have the gator. I said I don't want the money keep it. The young man started crying, and profusely thanked me. He said that I've been praying for GOD to help me, because he was fired from my company because they are going out of business. He was going to use the gator to feed his family. He had a new job, but it didn't start for two weeks. Then he gave me a big bear hug. He wanted to know how to repay me, and I told him, just help someone else who needs help.

I believe that GOD put that gator in my path to help this young man. There are no accidents in GOD'S plan. At my old age, I have learned that the greatest thing in the world is giving!

This isn’t anywhere near as dramatic, but I was driving home late one evening, and it was dark and icy. I wasn’t going any faster than I had to, and had just come out of a forty-five mile an hour zone, crossing over a small creek. The guy behind me was trying to hurry me along, but I kept my speed low, because of the ice. Visibility was poor, due to a driving, fine snow. Suddenly, about 30 feet ahead of me, a herd of about six small deer trotted across the road in front of me. I braked, and they all got across, except the last one walked right into the side of the rear panel. I just felt a “thunk”, but it didn’t move my car, then it just staggered on. Thank GOD the guy behind me, who had been accelerating, was able to swerve to a stop before hitting me. Knowing a little bit about the movements of deer, I’m sure a large buck had probably run across right before the females did, so I thank God he wasn’t in the bunch. I was driving a compact car, and even at 45 mph, if I’d hit him, or he’d run into me, I probably would have ended up in that creek. I just got a small dent in my car, but when I got home, I told my husband what an awesome God we serve, because it could have been much worse, for me and the guy behind me.
