Here we go again.
This was my honest reaction when I heard the Roseanne reboot was going to feature a non-binary child, Mark, who plays Roseanne's grandson. But here's the thing about initial reactions: They’re not always the right ones.
I am the mother of a transgender kid, Kai. She began transitioning at the age of four while being raised in a very conservative, Christian community in the South. When Kai came out as transgender, we received so many death threats and felt so unsafe that we were forced to move.
When Roseanne premiered, there was so much controversy surrounding it that I didn’t want to watch it with a negative mindset. In the weeks leading up to the first episode, I hoped beyond hope the show wasn’t going to be another attack on the LGBTQ+ community. I knew it would be talking about a population that’s at a very high risk of harming themselves. A group that's at risk not because they’re transgender, but because of the way the transgender community is often treated and portrayed through media.
Roseanne Barr has made some very trans-phobic statements in the past, but it’s my hope that having a non-binary grandson was her way of trying to make that right. It's good that a conversation is being encouraged. It’s even better that the show is portraying a child who is gender diverse, and that Mark is being shown as loved and supported by family.
At the same time, I want to ask: Is Mark going to get a nuanced and meaningful storyline, or is this just a token “diversity” cast member? Are the writers meeting with people from all areas of the LGBTQ+ community to make sure they’re accurately representing them? It’s important to remember that people are more than

Not brought out yet in the back story, but DJ is married to a service member now stationed in Afghanistan. Look forward to a homecoming scene with all the usual cliches.
DJ was himself in the service, and apparently served with the Army as constituted under the Obama regime. Which means that something like the Bowe Bergdahl story may be fitted in some way, maybe with DJ being on one of the patrol that attempted to retrieve Bergdahl.
The trashing of our National Anthem was the final straw in a long line of reasons why I don’t care for her. The author states at the end of her rant that she hasn’t watched the show. I have watched it a couple of times because FReepers were pushing it. No thanks. It’s garbage. I don’t need some brainwashed sexually confused tv child actor or it’s lesbian mother in my living room.

How in the hell do you assume your child is transgender at age 4 unless you’re pushing them in that direction?! 4 year olds should know 0 about sex and certainly zero about deviant behavior.

At age 4, kids “transition” into puppies, firemen and super heroes. They don’t know about sex or sexual orientation unless their parents force it on them.
Have you seen that kid on Master Chef Junior this season? Nine years old and the show addresses him as a she. It’s obvious why the show, for the first time ever, began the season with a boys’ team and a girls’ team. Yeah, they HAD to make sure people knew which team this little 9 year old was playing on. Looks like a he. Has a he voice. Dresses like a he. Has a he name. But they go out of their way to call the kid a girl at every turn but don’t do that to the other kids. Of course, the kid is in the finals despite the fact not having accomplished much during the season.
I have a close friend whose teenage daughter was always a little Tom boyish and started having a hard time getting along with other girls her age at school. So she decided that she would prefer to be a boy. My friend rightly identified this as a stage she was going through and a ploy for attention.
Unfortunately, my friend’s ex-wife who had abandoned him and their kids for several years to pursue drugs, alcohol and sex with other men, found out about it. She latched onto the daughter’s behavior and used it as a Segway to get back into the picture. The whole thing has turned into a giant nightmare with the daughter dressing like a boy, taking male hormones and just all sorts of other crap that will probably leave her permanently screwed up.
It is all just very sad that we have people in our society who morph what would most likely just be a nothing deal and turn it into something that is just a complete load of harmful nonsense. There are usually some type of ulterior motives involved that only make sense if you are familiar with the complete picture. In my friend’s case it was the screwed up family situation caused mostly by his wife becoming dependent on drugs and alcohol.

This person is calling her son trans gender based on the most blatant stereotypes of what a "girl" is.
She should be sent in for reeducation.
If her son had been sleeping in his Batman cape, she’d have to legally change his name to Bruce Wayne Shappley.

I wouldn’t mind that so much if she ALSO wasn’t a lawyer suing Texas to save her child from the trauma of going to the boys, or the gender-neutral, bathroom in public school!
Yup. She wants her child to be able to use the girl’s bathroom without interference.
Apparently, “full disclosure” has little to do with Good Housekeeping.
