Keziah Daum, an 18-year-old from Utah in the United States, who has no Chinese roots, was accused of cultural appropriation after posting photographs on Twitter that featured her in a traditional Chinese qipao, or cheongsam.
The dress symbolised a silent protest to promote gender equality after the fall of the dynasties and the beginning of the republican period in the early 1900s, and was worn during the 1919 reformist May Fourth Movement.

As she said, it’s just a dress.
I think it is a beautiful dress.

It’s a gorgeous, sexy, classic, and revealing in a very subtle way with that long slit up the side. What’s not to like unless one is a sad sack attention-seeker who wants to rain on other people’s happiness.
Of course his outrage might have been more effective if he didn't tweet things like this only a couple months ago.
Is it OK if I eat Chinese food? Or Mexican? Or Thai? Or Italian?
Is it OK if they eat “American” food?
Seriously, humons?
What’s funny is the complaints about the pose- the “Chinese bow” - the same people complaining about it didn’t complain when Obama was doing the Vietnamese reeducation camp bow to every third world dictator and douchebag he could find.
I wonder if they are just as judgmental when foreigners wearing American-style business suits use the western a/k/a “white” handshake.
That’s a beautiful dress worn by a beautiful young LADY.
Good for her and to HELL with the cultural appropriator whining losers.
Beautiful comment...
My granddaughter wears one given to her by her auntie. I also have a top that is traditionally Chinese.
Not one Chinese says anything about cultural appropriation. The comment is usually, how pretty, regarding my mixed race beauties.
The whole schmear is dedicated nastiness to provoke dissention and ugliness.
Grow the heck up! The world is round, not flat and your boo-hoo is just another whine.
When you stop using jeans, traditional american dress, and everything western, including the inventions and designs I’ll listen. But, you won’t. You just want to your one minute hate-fest.
And she wears it well. :)
AWESOME!!
Thanks!
Bagster
I'm confused. My wife is only half Japanese so is she allowed to cook her wonderful Japanese meals, or does she have to create some hybrid with from her Baltic other half?
Guaranteed to PO every "offended snowflake" of all stripes!
I'd put it on and wear it now but it's getting a bit warmer in KC for a "padded jacket with fur trim!"
I'll remember to wear it at least once a a week come fall!!!!
Interesting post.
I have no love for China but it sounds as if they have the lefts number.
Baizuo. Ill have to remember this when Im having fun with and ridiculing an idiot leftist on Twitter.
I believe it is the same word used by the teacher in the movie “Serenity” when she is getting the attention of her students.
People are getting sick of this PC crap - EVERYTHING you wear, say or do is cultural appropriation according to somebody somewhere. It gets flat out tiresome.
In spite of our differences the Chicoms have no respect for our Left.
South China Morning Post poll:
“Is it okay for non-Chinese people to wear cheongsams?”
YES — 96%
NO -— 4%
But most of the voters are native Chinese who have not been indoctrinated in post-modern critical theory. What do they know? Why would anybody pay attention to what they think?
I hope we never see the Lam boy who started the backlash ever wearing blue jeans. Or slacks. Or a Western-style suit.
Kudos to this high school girl for keeping her head when all about her were losing theirs and blaming it on her.
I imagine that can be quite difficult for a young person in this era of social media.
