This is meant as an automatic run off to avoid expense of runoffs . This not bad as California combined primary which was designed to lock out GOP from general election in many races.

Maine didn’t have run off elections for state wide offices prior to ranked choice voting. Whoever got the most votes on election day got elected. This was done so good Governor’s like Paul LePage who got less than 50% of the vote in a three way race wouldn’t get elected ever again.

Guessing most voters don’t understand it very well.
Do you lose if you do not vote on rank beyond first or second choice?

Here is the reason: During elections in Maine, the green party always draws votes away from the dems. Guaranteeing the Republican to win. This way only the 2 top vote-getters will be on the ballot, eliminating a 3rd party from draining dem. votes. That’s it in a nutshell.

Maine has decriminalized Female Genital Mutilation. It hasn’t gotten much coverage. It is to assuage the muzzie men in Lewiston and Portland and get their vote.

yikes...
Under the ranked-choice system, voters rank candidates in order of preference.
If no one has more than 50 percent of the vote after the first count, the candidate with the fewest votes is eliminated.
Voters who chose the eliminated candidate would have their ballots added to the totals of their second-ranked candidates, and the ballots would be retabulated.
The process continues until one candidate has a clear majority and is declared the winner.

Michael Moore has been pushing this Instant Run-Off system for two decades.

I have pretty much decided that anything he is for, I’m against it.

Not correct and off topic. Maine has failed to criminalize it.

No, it works a bit differently. If no one gets 50% plus 1, the candidate who got the least votes has the second choice on their ballots reallocated to the person’s second choice. The process continues until someone has 50% Folks who don’t make 2nd, 3rd choices etc cause the final tally to be less than 50% of the total ballots cast.

Maine has lefty independents running all the time so yes, this helps the rats. LePage would have lost in 2010 under this system.

I actually like it for GOP primaries (a runoff would also work), but yeah it is for the general election as well, I think.

The legislature voted to delay.. it? But there’s a “people’s veto” on the primary ballot to repeal whatever they did.

Maine is certainly no conservative state, but I'm surprised an actual Peter Fitzgerald/Al D'Amato/Rick Santorum-type GOP candidate can't win statewide with 34% of the vote in such a scenario. "Independents" like Angus King agree with like 95% of the RAT party platform. In theory it should be easy for a conservative to win under the radar with the RAT & "Independent" campaigning on identical issues, identical platforms, and going after the exact same voters.
