Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte on Sunday said the temporary ban on Filipinos going to work in Kuwait is now permanent, intensifying a diplomatic standoff over the treatment of migrant workers in the Gulf nation.
Mr Duterte in February imposed a prohibition on workers heading to Kuwait following the murder of a Filipina maid whose body was found stuffed in a freezer in the Gulf state.
The crisis deepened after Kuwaiti authorities last week ordered Manila's envoy to leave the country over videos of Philippine embassy staff helping workers in Kuwait flee allegedly abusive employers.
The two nations had been negotiating a labour deal that Philippine officials said could result in the lifting of the ban but the recent escalation in tensions has put an agreement in doubt.
"The ban stays permanently. There will be no more recruitment for especially domestic helpers. No more," Mr Duterte told reporters in the southern city of Davao.
There was no immediate response from Kuwait, where around 262,000 Filipinos are employed - nearly 60 percent of them as domestic workers, according to the Philippines' foreign department.
Last week the Philippines apologised over the rescue videos but Kuwaiti officials announced they were expelling Manila's ambassador and recalling their own envoy from the Southeast Asian nation.
Kuwait also detained four Filipinos hired by the Philippine embassy and issued arrest warrants against three diplomatic personnel, Manila said.

Yup.
I swallowed that line about all those Iraqi atrocities (such as killing the babies in the incubators). Turned out it was a bunch of B.S. We should have stayed away and just let the Iraqis keep the place when they invaded.
Okay, I have to ask. What movie was that from?
The Kuwaittes are the worst lot the most entitled and useless .
Tell me again why was Western blood and treasure spent on freeing Kuwait, the enslaving nation?
He was poised to take over Sauidi Arabia. He could have done it, too, if he had not hesitated. He gave us the time to position the troops to win the war.
Thanks!
Thats funny. Good comedy is dead.
Funny flick. Just as good as Holy Grail in my opinion and worth watching.
Muslims consider that anyone NOT muslim to have no rights.
They still believe it even when they live in countries who will jail them for acting out those barbarian beliefs.
The Philippines President has a duty to see his people NOT be molested by such barbarians. Removing Filipino citizens from employment by countries who don’t respect human rights UNTIL those country ACT to eliminate -— that is his DUTY.
Welcome to Free Republic
Whether one likes him or not Duterte does seems to CARE about the people of his country...unlike pretty much any elected Democrat of the past 20 years.
Duterte is a populist. That’s not a bad thing.
Following the model of the Kuwaites I guess
