Good news for travellers, the road distance between Delhi and Mumbai take very less time, thanks to the new project announced by the Central Government. Reportedly, the Union Road Transport and Highways Ministry is gearing up to build a super expressway to connect the two major cities of India, which would allow commuters to finish the 1,400 km long journey within 12 hours!
According to news reports, the project will be wrapped up in 4 phases. Meanwhile, work has started on the first and last stretches of the expressway, i.e., between Delhi and Jaipur as well as Vadodara and Mumbai.
"In the first phase, Delhi will be connected to Jaipur and Vadodara to Mumbai via super expressways. We plan to construct expressways from Jaipur to Kota in Rajasthan and further Kota to Vadodara. This will reduce the travel time between Delhi and Mumbai to less than 12 hours as compared to nearly 24 hours at present," Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said.
After the completion of this project, the commuters will be able to reach Delhi from Mumbai and vice-versa faster than trains, claim the officials. For now, Rajdhani Express covers the distance between the two cities in 16 hours.
As per NHAI officials, the construction of Delhi-Jaipur expressway (225 km approximate), which is worth INR 16,000 crore, is scheduled to be over within 15 months. The authorities are in the process of acquiring the land for the project. The new highway would begin from the border of Gurugram and finish at the Jaipur Ring Road. News has it that this would be the second advanced cement and concrete highway in India after the Mumbai-Pune expressway.
Currently, the duration by road between Delhi and Jaipur is over six hours, which has a maximum speed limit of 90 km per hour for passenger vehicles. The new expressway will be access-controlled that would help in maintaining consistent high speed. Sources said these expressways will have a speed limit of around 150 km per hour to achieve the claimed time limit.
Once this expressway is completed, it would reduce the distance between Jaipur and Delhi by 40 km, and commuters will be able to finish their journey in 2 hours. Moreover, these projects would enhance transport infrastructure and vehicular movement along NH8, which is a very congested entry route to Delhi.
The government also has plans to construct Vadodara-Mumbai expressway which would cost around INR 44,000 crore and would reduce the travel time to less than 3 hours.
Other expressway projects approved by the government are: Ahmedabad-Dholera, Delhi-Meerut, Delhi-Amritsar-Katra. Kanpur-Lucknow and Chennai-Bengaluru. Phase 1 of Delhi-Meerut expressway is expected to open on April 15, 2018. Even the eastern peripheral expressway in Delhi is scheduled to open on the same date. Both these projects are important in order to decongest Delhi by reducing the vehicular load by 50 percent.
According to statement given by Nitin Gadkari, the western peripheral expressway will also be thrown open two months after the above projects open. This will connect Delhi with north Indian cities like Amritsar, Dehradun and Katra via expressways.
The roads, reportedly, will be access-controlled and ensure high speed of traffic. Besides, the government is also quickening the work on Char Dham road in Uttarakhand. The project will provide round-the-year connectivity between prominent shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri . The 12,000-crore project is due for completion by March 2019.

I’ve said for quite a few years that there are well over a billion people in India and a similar population in China. And most of them would love to be driving. Oil will get continuously more scarce sooner or later. Nations are only feinting at wars over it so far, but that will intensify, too.
A project like this is very good and an economical blessing throughout the route. That’s take 1.
Take 2 is it becomes a crime ridden trap for travelers complete with roadblocks by thieves, murderers and of course the police for shakedowns. Kinda like driving from San Diego to Cabo San Lucas.

Seems to me that a high speed rail system would make more sense. Maybe one will be built along side the expressway.
This is a North-South route that would link the two richest & populous cities in India as well as connecting the national Capital of Delhi with the Indian Ocean/Arabian Sea seaport of Mumbai (Bombay till 1995). Can’t help but wonder if this is, at least in part, a reaction to China’s driving ambition to make the ancient ‘Silk Route’ from the Mediterranean Sea to Beijing new and fully usable. Enhancing maritime assets makes good sense for India as they are ‘locked out’ to the North by Pakistan and China, historically uneasy neighbors.

I think pollution is much more a concern in these places than the price or scarcity of oil; think of the smog situations in Denver or LA, and imagine that with so many more people.
Alternative power sources are inevitable (even if some time off) because of the billions in Asia; without repressive governments keeping them down, they’ll ALL want to drive...
Other populous countries simply do not have great roads in quantity outside of Western Europe.
Making this project a true transportation corridor, with pathways for freight rail, passenger rail, trucking, pipeline and the highway. If they are going to disrupt the population then do it right.
Average speed of ~73 MPH for the 12-hr trip. That’s with zero time for potty breaks...

That was with one speeding ticket and two bathroom breaks.
