PACARAIMA, Brazil Hundreds turn up each day, many arriving penniless and gaunt as they pass a tattered flag that signals they have reached the border.
Once they cross, many cram into public parks and plazas teeming with makeshift homeless shelters, raising concerns about drugs and crime. The lucky ones sleep in tents and line up for meals provided by soldiers pregnant women, the disabled and families with young children are often given priority. The less fortunate huddle under tarps that crumple during rainstorms.
The scenes are reminiscent of the waves of desperate migrants who have escaped the wars in Syria and Afghanistan, spurring a backlash in Europe. Yet this is happening in Brazil, where a relentless tide of people fleeing the deepening economic crisis in Venezuela has begun to test the regions tolerance for immigrants.
This month, the governor of the northern Brazilian state of Roraima sued the federal government, demanding that it close the border with Venezuela and provide additional money for her overburdened education and health systems.
Were very fearful this may lead to an economic and social destabilization in our state, said the governor, Suely Campos. Im looking after the needs of Venezuelans to the detriment of Brazilians.
Continue reading the main story The tens of thousands of Venezuelans who have found refuge in Brazil in recent years are walking proof of a worsening humanitarian crisis that their government claims does not exist.
They also constitute an exodus that is straining the regions largely generous and permissive immigration policies. Earlier this month, Trinidad deported more than 80 Venezuelan asylum seekers. In Colombian and Brazilian border communities, local residents have attacked Venezuelans in camps.

I’m sorry to say it, but this long-running socialist soap-opera is actually a good for the world.
People need a constant reminder of the evils of socialism, or they very quickly forget.
For all those Venezuelans who enthusiastically voted for Hugo Chaves, this is what happens when you vote for socialism.
They drove all the capitalist out of the country and now they are suffering greatly.
Let them wallow in their misery.
Force the UN to publicly acknowledge this problem.
Drawing attention and shaming Venezuela might force people to at least deal with what's going on.
Better build a wall, Brazil.
This is happening in California and other illegal anti-American "sanctuary" states at a rapid rate. The left thinks socialism and illegal colonists are essential and they have the right to walk into America and have Constitutional rights.
Every US socialist should be forced to live one month in Venezuela followed by a week in North Korea, before being allowed to vte. Add liberals over 40 to that requirement as well. Call it remedial Capitalism 1A.
I’m sure they would try to “fix” the system. And the useful idiots would be shot down.
Too many libtards will just say “they did it wrong”. Next time it will be better!!!!
Ironically, these Venezuelans are true refugees from the opression of leftist progressive tyranny
Wouldnt the Brazillians really be helping them MORE by not letting them in, and forcing them to deal with their own country by taking it back? Venesuelians should be FAR wealthier than Brazillians, given the natural resources there.
People are the new locusts.
Wasnt the world really much better off when the CIA would quietly take care of governments like Venezuelas?
Soon to be a NYT best seller: The new Venezuela Diet, lose weight, get in shape!
The neighbors should set up camps for them. Give them food, water, seeds, a rifle, and ammunition. Thrn send them back.
I have a great deal of sympathy for those who never voted for Chavez or Maduro, but the rest can starve to death.
Venezuela has been losing that skilled workforce for years; they started washing up in my area when Chavez came to power.
At the very least, American socialists should pay taxes before they vote. Our cities are filled with socialists from bloodlines that have never seen a W-2...
Sean Penn and that Kennedy silver spooner( Joe?) OWN this...and they should give every single penny they have to take care of these people...
Chavez bribed Joe Kennedy with heating oil. Joe is cheap. His namesake Grandpa is probably rolling in his grave. It is a Kennedy so he probably got some graft somewhere.
I heard it’s in the millions now. The ordinary, educated and productive Venezuelans want to get out-— for their own survival.
