US ambassador said Donald Trump's abrasive style came from Scottish heritage Woody Johnson said Trump 'speaks in very clear and unusual way' for a politician The US president is due to come to Britain for talks with Theresa May on July 13 Critics have vowed a 'carnival of protests' on the streets when he visits the UK

Donald Trump rubs people up the wrong way because he is so Scottish, the US ambassador suggested today.

Woody Johnson said the US president's 'tough and argumentative' streak came from his heritage in Scotland.

The claim came as Mr Johnson shrugged off the prospect of mass protests against Mr Trump when he visits the UK on July 13.

The trip was finally confirmed last night after months of wrangling between Downing Street and the White House.

Officials were thought to have been looking at whether to stage some or all of visit away from London to avoid it being marred by demonstrations.

There has been speculation Mr Trump might hold talks with Theresa May at her Chequers country retreat, and meet the Queen or other royals in either Scotland or Windsor – although it will not be a state visit.

LOL, my DNA heritage came back as originally Scottish/Welsh/Irish that later moved into France and Germany so I’m in trouble. The bloodline goes back to Normans that earned land in Scotland for fighting with King David in the 12th century. I don't know if my original ancestors were French Normans or a handful of English Normans. I don't have much ancestry from England, only 9%. The DNA test showed I originated from only five genetic areas.

My more recent Scottish ancestor came here in the mid-1700’s and fought in the Revolution. Sometime during the Scottish clearances my ancestors moved into America and back to France and Germany. According to the DNA map, my ancestors that are still in Europe are in France and Germany.

I had a blast with the DNA search and it proved all of my information that has been researched by me and my family. I'm also proud to have something in common with President Trump. Most of the people on my Scottish side of the family are blunt and outspoken like he is. We just temper it a bit with our Southern manners. I guess that's why I'm not bothered by the most of the things he says.

I’m guilty of the same thing. I’m half-Scot.

This explains quite a lot, actually.

If London egged on by its Muslim mayor erupts in out of control rioting, then Sadiq Khan can rightly claim to be the ruler of UK.

Scots can be abrasive but they also have a sense of humor that is dry as a bone and absolutely hilarious for those smart enough to catch on to it.

Had Trump been around to negotiate for the Jacobites there may never had been a Battle of Culloden.

I did some research and found that President Trump goes back to one of the kings of Scotland through his mother’s McLeod family

Brothers and sisters are natural enemies. Like Englishmen and Scots! Or Welshmen and Scots! Or Japanese and Scots! Or Scots and other Scots! Damn Scots! They ruined Scotland!

The reason that is so funny is because it's so close to the truth! :)

Years ago I read an article that suggested that one of the primary reasons for the Civil War was a continuation of the animosity between the English and the Scots. The South had a larger settlement of Scottish than did the North, and the North had a larger settlement of English than did the South.

Coincidence? I don't think so.

There were a lot of Scottish immigrants that fought for the South in the Civil War and especially in the Revolutionary War. It was something about the never ending war they fought with England for Scottish independence and the fact that they refused to give up their new independence in their new country the way they were forced to in Scotland. The Scots were fierce fighters. They saw the Civil War as the same thing. They valued their independence and I’m sure it chafed to have Northern states messing with that independence and way of life. None of my family owned slaves and didn’t believe in it but it was mostly because the Scots were so independent and felt like all people should be free. To them that meant freedom from government and not letting anybody push them around. That’s the impression I got from my family history anyway. Scots always hated England for oppressing them so I’m sure you are right.

Another thing they brought with them from Scotland was their ability to make whiskey. :-) A lot of the mountain moonshiners have Scottish ancestry.

You would enjoy “The Cousins Wars” by Kevin Phillips. It shows through demographics that the English Civil War, the US Revolution and the US Civil War were fought by the same people against each other.

The man’s got a good point. Fair amount of Scot in my blood. I have no issue with Trump’s style, tweets, speaking, etc. Maybe I’m used to it from family.

Ditto. I adored the Craig Ferguson's dark, gritty humor on the Late, Late Show and could not imagine, and cannot to this day, why people think loony lefty James Corden is preferable.

He did dozens of hilarious monologues about the rough-edged Scottish temperament.

Didn't see this television special, but the book is one of the best cultural history books about the Scots in America out there. My copy is dog-eared and underlined throughout. Here's the book cover:
