Poor General Lee ... all those family responsibilities. My oldest son broke his leg last weekend, so we’ve got him hanging around needing nursing until ... whenever. It’s safer here than the hospital: we have only ordinary germs, not multiple-antibiotic-resistant ones.

Amusing item on Page 18, “Warning to Plump Young Ladies.” Don’t drink vinegar thinking it will help you lose weight, even if your maid says so: it’ll kill you!

Politicians will always be politicians. Only a politician could view Lecompton’s rejection as a victory for the slave states.

We now remember Davis as the President of the Confederacy. However, Jefferson Davis was a moderate, in practice, before the war. He opposed secession until his state seceded.
