Dear Cooking Friends;
Since I changed my weekly cooking thread to a monthly one, I've received several private emails from folks who are disappointed at this change.
It's very gratifying to me that the thread has been so popular and that so many have enjoyed engaging it. As I mentioned in March, my life is going to be rather consumed with a couple of unusual projects over the coming Summer. I have felt that my free time wouldn't be predictable enough to give the thread the care that I tried to give it over the past several years.
However, if anyone would like to access the ping list on my home page, and post more frequent threads, that would be great. Yaelle and Cottonball have done a wonderful job of this in the past.

What is it about beach sand that gets everywhere?!
It’s amazing how many churches there are down here. Baptist mostly (where I’m looking) although there are two synagogues and ten Catholic Churches. But, obviously, Baptist is the major religion. Vast amounts of churches from wealthy to teeny tiny ones.
Hey! You have to get some knuckle in those potato pancakes, or theyre not authentic ;-)
For good carrot salad the larger disk (larger holes) is better, true. In Switzerland they always use the mushy little blades for carrot salad. And they do it very vinegary and of course no white sauce (mayo sour cream mix) or raisins. Its unAmerican. Lol.
It even blows in the wind!
I laugh when I see those ‘beach hair’ sprays with salt in them. Real ‘beach hair’ is full of sand, too ;-)
Believe me, the big city has PLENTY of drawbacks too. Id probably be shot for wearing my maga hat. I even hid it in my closet because you never know which guest might go in there.
Thanks for the recommendation about the summers in TN. I dream of moving to Nashville (I really am a city girl and I need an NHL team). And here in the SFV our summers match or are hotter than Bakersfield summers. So I appreciate that from someone who knows both.
The ocean is magical though. We lived in Manhattan Beach with a view of the ocean from our living room and I couldnt get enough. Just the smell, he different colors of the water, wondering what those fishermen were doing at night with their lights on... the fresh moist air... if I won $3 million Im going back.
Still, I could live without it. Water is magical, and lakes and rivers and even streams fill the bill.
Some of their tips. The butter one, they did before they did a butter experiment. I see them put butter in with everything. Just watched the video where they did cheesecake. Looked Amazing!

LOL!!!
I do love water also. And the smell of the salt spray is nice. But it messes up my glasses and dries out my skin. Just a personal preference not to be around it.
But give me a gurgling brook or a river with little waterfalls any day! We live not too far from the creek, although I really wish it was on our property. We only have an ugly muddy pond.
And most of the churches here are quite beautiful. Brick buildings with pretty windows and of course white steeples.
Im wondering how the congregations afford them. With so many churches in a sparsely populated area, they each cant be too full!
I found an Earth Fire store about 70 mi. here. I checked out their web site, and am intrigued. The closest place anywhere near that around here is Whole Foods, about 10 mi. away. If I drove to Earth Fare it appears I would need a cooler...which I have.
I’m putting sous vide on hold for a while. I just got a couple of cookbooks and I’m working on using the recipes there for the foreseeable future. I’m prepared to spend a fair amount on new equipment, including a food processor, and maybe a bread machine. Also want to stock up on basics - sheet pans with racks, egg turners, a couple of thermometers, especially an infrared one that can accurately determine that I have the correct temp for frying.
Thanks for all the info. Feel free to ping me on any posts you making dealing with cooking...
Air fryer? Frying w/o fat? How’s that working out? What do you make with it?
Id like to know also. I have a friend who got one and swears by it, but I still dont understand how it works.
It is a Crock Pot or Slow Cooker on Steroids
Does so many things.
I dont know why it wasnt around earlier
I wouldnt get shot for anything I wear, but even here its best to keep quiet about politics. We need business from everyone, not just like minded people.
I went to college in a close suburb of St. Paul. I learned that I could live in the metro area if I had to, but Im definitely a small town gal. Funny though, we moved to a new town a couple of years ago and its been harder to meet people here than other places Ive lived. We like it, but some small towns are slow to accept new people. Id heard that about my hometown , but my moms family had been there for generations. Shoe is on the other foot here!
I’ve been on the fence about a Sous Vide but you are making me really want one.
Thanks!
I like to make this one. I add curry powder to the recipe:

Do you make small slits for venting or not? I would love to have a Trader Joe’s.
Last summer, I slow roasted a lot of tomatoes from the garden. This was a popular recipe that I served to my garden club. I did add some cashews on one batch and did one without.
