The last few weeks I have noticed that my computer shuts down randomly. When it does this a blue screen comes up with a message that my computer will be restarting and then sending the error information that caused the problem to Microsoft. It also has a QR Code showing.
Until recently I have never seen this happen and it seems to happen when I leave the computer on for a few hours.
I am wondering if this is the result of some download from Microsoft.
Nope. Ronald Reagan era-technology. :-)
VAX was department-level (e.g. 1 step below mainframe) and now out of business, CRAY is supercomputers.
Modem close to computer-correction
I was being a bit facetious. I’m a fan of deadpan humor.
The best thing to do is move to Linux. Sadly, I have too many critical software packages that only run on Windows. So, I nurse XP along...
Windows 10 works flawless for me.
I would make sure everything is backed up as best you can.
Then I would take a serious look at your hard drive. You could start with Chkdsk. Have you done that?
You are now on the list MS sends to "der authorities".
J/K of course, do not use Win 10 and probably never will.
Don’t ignore the hardware. How old is the PC. Many motherboards suffer from swollen capacitors that cause the motherboard to just shut the computer off as they get too warm. Considering your problem only appears after being on for an extended time, I would look at these.
Almost every time Microsoft updates Windows 10, it screws up my computer and I have to wait for them to fix it. Check this out:

I get it sometimes with Windows 8. I have been able to tie it down to an issue with Outlook, which intermittently has problems with Notes (which I don’t use). Upon restart, Outlook works OK.
Most of my major corporate clients (engineering companies, refineries, etc.) are staying away from Windows 10. Most are even staying with Windows 7.
BTW, I am using the conventional desktop with 8, rather than the “Fisher-Price” Metro user interface. The latter gives the OS the functionality of a toy.
Click the Windows icon in the lower left tray, then click Run, then (You type) eventvwr.msc and press enter. Wait for eventviewer to load. Under Custom Views you will find Administrative Events. Click that, and wait for the events to load. You will see many errors, most of which are trivial and have nothing to do with your problem. Just pay attention to the errors that showed up right before a reboot. If you know the exact time of a reboot, that will help. Otherwise you will have to look for an error message in those logs saying that the computer shut down unexpectedly. After that, if you cannot figure out what an error means, use Google. If there are messages about your hard disk, that probably needs to be replaced.
VAX. So why not go to X-Windows, then? Good old rock solid Bell Labs UNIX as the underlying operating system. Still better than any of the crap Microsoft forces on us.
I’ve heard of swollen capacitors.....does it hurt?
Had that happen to me on my last comp. The hard drive was going out. I solved the problem by purchasing a new computer.
Bot a new CPU...and Windows 10 is on it..Have not switched over yet.
You can shut Cortina up, you know.
Undocumented ‘feature’ of Winblows?
Ive heard of swollen capacitors.....does it hurt?
Only if you try to pop them like a zit.
I put my win10 hard drive in just to update it and of course I get the Blue screen(mostly when updating) so when it rebooted I removed it and put the Linux hard drive back in
