Great acting by Hal Holbrook
Into the Wild via You Tube ^ | April 9, 2018 | beaversmom

I watched Into the Wild (2007) last night on NetFlix for the first time. I am familiar with the story, and even have the book. I have had the book for many years, but have yet to read it.

Hal Holbrook's character, Ron Franz, comes in toward the end of the film. His on screen time is not that much, but the acting, to me, is so good and real. His character really made me cry. I felt so much compassion for him.

I have seen Holbrook in TV movies and feature films over the decades, and have always thought he was a really good actor, but his role in this, even though fairly short, should have garnered him an Oscar...jmo.

Two short scenes with Holbrook's character:

I remember he played a baddie in some TV movie. Think it was with Katharine Ross. Or maybe she was the baddie.

Here it is:

His performance in Creepshow was also Oscar worthy.

My favorite Hal Holbrook moment came when Dirty Harry blew him up in “Magnum Force”.

He blowed up good.
Blowed up real good.

Just posted a Magnum link moments prior to your post. Been years since I’ve seen it.

I think he was in Bridge on the River Kwai. The lone American and he killed it with his performance as the skirt-chasing, fraud Navy officer.

That was William Holden....

“Mark Twain Tonight” - brilliant!!!!

Saw him do it live twice over a 10-year period. Remarkable

McCandless was a bit strange. He gave away all the money his parents gave him to attend college to some lefty “charity” and headed off on an adventure. There is the possibility that he sickened/killed himself by eating a plant he thought was edible and didn’t just die of straight starvation.
