Why Humans Are Obsessed with Cats - We Love Cats and Kittens

In this eye opening and informative video we see how felines have taken over not only the Internet, but our homes, and of course, our lives. It points out that it is us that are obsessed with cats and not the other way round. This is a must see for any cat lover as it explains a lot about our relationship with cats and how that relationship has evolved.

Dogs pee and poop outside and don't require us to clean up their fecal matter.

Yes, that's what our neighbors in this townhome community think is acceptable behavior, as their darlings leave poo piles and urine burn spots on other peoples' lawns, in defiance of the law. This is a "leash and scoop" county. Walking a dog and picking up after it when the stuff is still steaming a lot more work than scooping dessicated tootsie rolls out of the cat litter every day or two.

We fostered five, one only made it a day. Tiniest one as well. possibility just undernourished as they all were. Ended up keeping the smallest girl that is in my lap now. Total daddy’ girl. She only weighed a pound at five or six weeks. Still tiny.

If someone doesn’t like cats then its likely they never owned one or had any friends that ever owned one. One thing is for sure I will never waste my time trying to convince somebody that cats are extraordinary. It’s their loss

A coyote is a cat’s mortal enemy.

Rat dogs as well.

Had some new neighbors move into a condo next to ours. Left their yappy rat dog out all night. Surprise! it was gone the next morning. They tried to blame us. Of course, well fed coyotes fearlessly patrolled the condo association grounds.

FKS = Fading Kitten Syndrome (not KDS, my mistake)

Apparently their immune systems are very weak early on. If the mother abandons them early (as happened with our three) the incidence rate goes up. I think we could have saved our guy getting him to the vet a couple of days earlier, but I couldn’t get approval until too late. A pity. Sweetest critter I’ve ever seen. If I ever foster kittens again I will insist on being able to take them to the vet on my say so, and will pay if necessary. I won’t watch one fail like that again while my hands are tied.

They’re fragile at first. Just part of the package I guess.

They’ve really grown on me. Affectionate but not clinging. Nice company for quiet people. A pain for getting into stuff though!

Manipulative meow: Cats learn to vocalize a particular sound to train their human companions
By Lynne Peeples on July 13, 2009
https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/news-blog/the-manipulative-meow-cats-learn-to-2009-07-13/

Bradshaw also suggests that there is not a universal cat language but in fact, cats developed a secret code of meows unique to the cat and human. In a 2003 study by Cornell researchers, which Bradshaw documents in his book, the researchers record meows from 12 cats in five everyday scenarios. They then played those recordings to pet owners, and found that only the owners could correctly decipher the scenario in which the meow was recorded. So cat owners can tell with some accuracy what message their cat is trying to get across via its meows, whether its feed me or I’m bored or whatever else, but “each meow is an arbitrary, learned, attention-seeking sound rather than some universal cat-human language” according to Bradshaw.

You’re not factoring in the the cost of litter. Man, that stuff has gotten expensive - for DIRT!

I don't mind at all the minimal cleaning involved in owning a cat. The pleasure they give me in just being able to enjoy their beauty and grace is worth it all. The loving companionship is icing on the cake.

I'm done with you. As someone posted; if you hate cats and refuse to be around them, it's your loss.

Wow, that’s sad. I lost a 6-week kitten once, but the vet thought it was distemper. Still remember her 40+ years later.

Three of ours were born wild, so socializing them to human contact and their evolution from terrified wild captives to loving indoor domestics has been interesting.

They remain different from the ones that were born into a human environment.

I think ours were feral. They were found alone, and remain kind of edgy, whereas another cat we have that was a true housecat is far more mellow, and disdainful, of the urchins.
