A high school senior from Houston, Texas, was accepted by each of the 20 top-ranked universities to which he applied — and was offered a full scholarship to every single one of them.

Michael Brown, a 17-year-old student at Lamar High School, went viral after he was caught on camera screaming in glee upon learning he was accepted into Stanford University in December.

Little did the teen know at the time, but his excitement would increase by a factor of 20 in March when he was also accepted into Harvard, Princeton, Yale, the University of Pennsylvania, Georgetown, Northwestern, Vanderbilt and the University of Michigan, among other prestigious colleges.

But what did it take for Brown to pull off his flawless clean sweep?

To start, the high schooler has an impressive 4.68 grade point average and an SAT score of 1540 out of 1600. His ACT score, a 34 out of a possible 36, proved to be just as excellent.

Yup - Great scores for certain and congrats to the kid. But a white kid would have only made it into 6-8 of those colleges, with a scholarship at maybe 1. An Asian kid would have made it into 2-4 of those colleges with 0 scholarships.

If I could do it again the same way, I’d mess it up all over again.

It costs money to apply. Who applies to 20 schools?

I'd turn him away for being indecisive.

I read a story on the number 1 public school in the country, UC Berkeley, a while back. Apparently, it’s almost impossible for them to get the top academically qualified black high school boys because private universities offer them full scholarships. There are a few more black girls with good grades so they do get some of them.

Kids like this guy are nearly as highly recruited as a 5 star football player.

Hasn't been that way in a long, long time. AP classes usually count as up to 6.0 and AG/Honors classes are usually up to 5.0 with regular classes at 4.0. 4.68 wouldn't even have been my HS valedictorian or salutatorian and that was 18 years ago.

Even the college I went to you could get above a 4.0 as A+ counted as 4.3 (I averaged 4.08 I think).

Whites are irrelevant. They are not discussed. Only the accomplishments of non-whites matter. Didn’t you get the memo?

I think that at least partial scholarship would have been more generous, and the acceptances might have been a little higher than you think, but in general you are on target. Whatever school gets him is fortunate, as you want as many people in your program that can actually do well in the program as possible.

Our white son had similar SATs and was accepted at 5 of those schools. But no scholarship. He had to go somewhere that offered him something.

I often wondered, why Yale or Harvard, or any of the other Ivy leagues? Why not John Doe U. or college? They all use the same text books or similar ones to the Ivy leagues. One’s success depends on the individual, not the name of the institution. Status seeking I guess. “Look at me, I went to Yale, Harvard et.al..”, sounds better than I graduated 1st in my class from Jone Doe College.” “Errrr, where is that?”

Agree. When my son was applying, we lived in California and the money was tight (money is ALWAYS tight in California, except for the rich people). It was $65 to apply, so I had to limit him to 5 schools. And he had full ride scholarship offers to several schools, including Berkeley, and UCLA. But two of the 3 Ivys rejected him and the third to which he applied wait listed him. It was $65 15 years ago......I cannot imagine how much it costs to apply now.
