My mother used to almost whisper: “Time to get up,” followed only rarely by an even softer, “Time to get up, unless you want your father to wake you up.” Needless to say, I jumped up instantly.

My dad woke each of my older siblings up - once each. I didn’t need to experience the “ice bucket challenge”, back before it was in style, to know it wasn’t worth pushing my luck.
