CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. A Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to the back of an airplane because of her weight.
Amber Manjee is just one of several people across the country sharing her bad experience on an airline publicly.
Ever since she's been back home, Amber Manjee's had the incident on her mind.
"I was in tears," she said. "The people who sat in front of me turned around and said, 'well you should lose weight.'"
Manjee says she asked for a seat belt extender to be more comfortable when she sat down, even though she can do without one. It's part of her routine when she's traveling for business, along with picking an emergency exit row seat.
But, next thing she knew the Delta flight attendant came to tell her she had to move this time.
Manjee explained, "She's saying loud for everybody to hear 'You're overweight. You have to have an extender. You have to move,'"
Manjee says she hasn't felt the way she did in that moment since she was in high school.(snip)
Manjee emailed the company from the back seat of the plane she was reassigned to. By the time the plane landed she had a response. Delta apoligized for the way she was treated and offered her a $500 voucher.
"Oh, I've not accepted it," she said.
Instead, she wants Delta to promise employees will receive more sensitivity training, so that what happened to her, doesn't happen to anyone else.(snip)
Delta's company policy states that seat belt extenders cannot be used in the exit row due to the likelihood that the dangling strap may become a hazard for passengers attempting to exit the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

All she needed was thrust.
You of all people should know that...

Big whoop. I got kicked off a turboprop flight once because of my weight - it was extremely hot out and the plane was overweight, so they asked the 3 biggest people to take the next flight. I didn’t want to endanger the flight, so I deplaned. No biggie.
Wide-body. Its not just an aircraft design.
More “sensitivity training”
OK sure.
not at all.
she admitted she knew she was big enough that she asks for seat extender many times she flies to make her more comfortable. she knows she’s very over weight but then is offended if someone mentions it in the course of them making sure flying regulations are followed and in the process of looking out for all passengers safety and reasonable accommodation in that specific aircraft size and needs to best fly and be ready for any possible emergency?
the passenger is the one with the problem and if she can’t handle her size and what it might mean in air travel she should not fly.
DanZ ~ I see you were a Boy Scout - Always come prepared
Laz always comes...
Logic.
Exactly. I can just imagine a bunch of passengers trying to squeeze her fat ass through the emergency exit so others can live.
Maybe she should consider losing some weight. Sometimes the truth hurts.
Perhaps they need a Cargomaster to adjust the load as we had in the USAF.
Just make sure to strap her down securely to the cargo pallet. You dont want her rolling about in the cargo bay .
Please tell me that’s her belly button!
I'll bet you're right.
“Just make sure to strap her down securely to the cargo pallet. You dont want her rolling about in the cargo bay”.
“
Or god forbid out the back clam shell.
That said, I have had very uncomfortable airline rides in which the obese human next to me blubbed waaayyy into my space and onto my person. I hated every moment of it, and if the flights weren't full, I would have moved.
So, I'm of two minds. If a person of size is obese because of an issue that is beyond self control, I'm sympathetic. And, if a person chooses a dissolute lifestyle that leads to obesity, that person chooses to be put in an airline row in which an extender, extends, and normally sized passengers are not intruded upon.
Don’t you worry. I use a scuba suit with extra air tanks, and an emergency beacon that broadcasts GPS of my location.
For some reason Fantastic Voyage comes to mind.
:-)
You mean an entire palette of pretzels...
In terms of weight and balance, yes it is.
delta policy

Passengers may not sit in an exit seat if it is likely they would be unable to perform certain emergency procedures because they:
Lack sufficient mobility, strength, or dexterity in both arms and hands, and both legs to reach the emergency exit, operate the exit and exit expeditiously.
Are less than 15 years of age.
Lack the ability to understand crew instructions.
Lack sufficient vision or hearing to perform functions illustrated on the safety/emergency exit card.
Lack the ability to impart information orally to other passengers.
Have a condition or responsibility, such as caring for small children that might prevent them from performing the applicable exit row functions. Have a condition that might cause them harm if they perform one or more of the applicable exit row functions.
Require the use of a seat belt extension. (this limitation is intended to preclude the hazard of entanglement with the additional length of the extension by those passengers attempting to expeditiously exit the aircraft)
Use a wheelchair or other assist device
Are using supplemental oxygen or a portable oxygen concentrator.
Are traveling with an emotional support animal, service animal or family pet.
Note: Passengers in child restraint devices may not be assigned seats in an exit row or in seats directly in front of or behind an exit seat.
The article doesn’t say what type of aircraft. Everyone is asked to move on Bombardier ATR series planes.
