CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. A Chattanooga woman says she was forced to move to the back of an airplane because of her weight.
Amber Manjee is just one of several people across the country sharing her bad experience on an airline publicly.
Ever since she's been back home, Amber Manjee's had the incident on her mind.
"I was in tears," she said. "The people who sat in front of me turned around and said, 'well you should lose weight.'"
Manjee says she asked for a seat belt extender to be more comfortable when she sat down, even though she can do without one. It's part of her routine when she's traveling for business, along with picking an emergency exit row seat.
But, next thing she knew the Delta flight attendant came to tell her she had to move this time.
Manjee explained, "She's saying loud for everybody to hear 'You're overweight. You have to have an extender. You have to move,'"
Manjee says she hasn't felt the way she did in that moment since she was in high school.(snip)
Manjee emailed the company from the back seat of the plane she was reassigned to. By the time the plane landed she had a response. Delta apoligized for the way she was treated and offered her a $500 voucher.
"Oh, I've not accepted it," she said.
Instead, she wants Delta to promise employees will receive more sensitivity training, so that what happened to her, doesn't happen to anyone else.(snip)
Delta's company policy states that seat belt extenders cannot be used in the exit row due to the likelihood that the dangling strap may become a hazard for passengers attempting to exit the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

the thing about this is she is taking the emergency exit seat when she travels....I am sure it is because of the extra leg room on that row. then she asks for an extender. all of this says size is a problem....those sitting in the emergency exit row should not be the one least able to take advantage of it....her size tells me that if there was a emergency she would be a problem for the other passengers trying to make an exit from the plane.
Even those with a medical reason don’t have to be morbidly obese. Calories do not come from air. If they have a low metabolism, they need less calories. They should eat for their metabolism.
An aft CG allows the aircraft to fly more efficiently. Maybe its the airlines new fuel savings initiative!
Not someone I would want to have to try to sit next to on a flight
She should have bought a first class ticket
Not going to change anything....
I think there might be a tad difference tween a Beech commuter and a Delta Airlines jet.
“I much fear serious trouble in the fuselage, Frederick”.
“picking an emergency exit row seat.”
It is possible there was more to this than was printed. Emergency row seats require an athletically sound individual who is going to assist passengers out the door they sit next to. They are normally briefed on this as they buy the ticket. Because of my height and weight, I used to get those seats because they are wider than the other seats. But as my capacity physically shrunk, I was unable to sit there as defined by their trade off for getting more leg room.
Here is a copy of the Southwest Airline restrictions conforming to the FAA regulations:

With her weight and possible inability to physically perform the tasks required, she may have been removed from the position when she sent up a red flag by asking for a seet extender. It is a common practice of most airlines to question the people there if they can, or will, do the required needs of the seat. If they get a negative on either, they will be removed. I’ve seen the situation on Southwest, Alaska, Continental, Delta years ago, and American where the questions were asked. And a couple of times they asked for volunteers to sit those seats.

I was on a puddle hopper once with a bunch of heffers like myself. The pilot announced, due to atmospheric conditions, he had to cut weight on plane and said the next person to board would have to wait for the next flight. Then a woman (about Twiggys size) boarded and was asked to leave due to weight restrictions - everyone of us started laughing !
It would look like when Auric Goldfinger got sucked out through the broken window in his jet. Get stuck in the opening, hesitate for a second, then Schluuuuup! Other passengers might have to douse her with Purel to grease her up a bit. (Don't get too excited now, Laz.)
How in the world would she be able to fit through the over-wing emergency exit; and, she sure couldn’t help anyone else exit the plane.
She looks a little chubby, alright. How do you handle a situation like this in a classy way? What about the person seated next to her?...if there was one.
“Amber Manjee”
Oh, the huge manatee
From another person who posted: “I was on a 17 seat turboprop. We had to shift seats for load balancing.
Anything to make the pilot’s job easier.
Safety first.
Especially in an airplane.”
That makes sense. You did not.
LOL!!
Emergency exit seats have more legroom for a reason. They are exit isles. Airlines (and passengers) want strong hunkin’ men on the emergency exits, so they can open and lift the 100lb door out of the way and help people egress. This woman is obviously incapable of lifting a door or of helping others exit.
The airline is right on this one.
Those people shouldn’t have been so rude and uncivilized to Amber. We don’t need people acting like monkeys in our society. But Amber should also know that self-esteem is an unhealthy concept, and that pride is a weakness. Like so many of us, she should focus on being more active, losing weight and getting in shape. And what is past is past. There’s a new day. Most people are only much concerned about their own appearances.
“Mabel! Black Label. Carling’s Black Label Beer.”
Gramps used to drink it. I think they had a brewery in Cleveland, It was cheap.
How you gonna feel on a transAtlantic flight with that beside you? You complain or just resign yourself to insufficient foot room and with her beside you, you lose all the room for your torso and she mashes your hips when she has to have the armrest up so she can actually sit on the seat. Ticket prices should be by total weight of the passenger and luggage. Then there should be seats of varying width that are paid for by the weight calculation for tickets. The cost to the airline for carrying you is related to the fuel used. More fuel is required to move a three hundred pound mound of self indulgence than a 90 pound anorexic.
