I have fond memories of dying Easter eggs when I was a kid; today, the smell of vinegar will always take me back to the dining-room table of my childhood, and the PAAS egg-dying kits. Last week, I discovered a somewhat messier alternative technique that nevertheless results in a beautiful dyed egg: Shaving Cream Easter eggs (remember to only use shaving CREAM for this, not the gel):

In 1937, a General Connor wrote from West Point to Colonel Simon Bolivar Buckner of Kentucky - who was then at Fort Meade - a request for the latters famous Mint Julep recipe. S. B. Buckner responded with a beautifully lyrical letter describing the preparation of this
quintessence of gentlemanly beverages...A mint julep is not the product of a FORMULA. It is a CEREMONY and must be performed by a gentleman possessing a true sense of the artistic, a deep reverence for the ingredients and a proper appreciation of the occasion. It is a rite that must not be entrusted to a novice, a statistician, nor a Yankee. It is a heritage of the old South, an emblem of hospitality and a vehicle in which noble minds can travel together upon the flower-strewn paths of happy and congenial thought .
Here is a link to the letter on the Buckner family home page, including the recipe for this beverage eminently appropriate for honorable men and beautiful women:

And to go with your drinks: Angels on Horseback Oysters wrapped in bacon and broiled or grilled. If youve never tried or think you dont like oysters, as this post on the site Whats Cooking America suggests these Angels might be a great way to introduce yourself to them:

I think I’m in Love!
You can get these from a local seafood shop here in the lower Chesapeake Bay. They sell a lot on QVC.

So glad you liked the recipe.
There’s so many good brands of canned oysters.
The ones used here are canned in oyster liquor which is nice.
I’m not sure which is more traditional; Angels on Horseback (with oysters) goes back to Mrs. Beeton’s recipe book of the late 1880s.
I know that the bacon-wrapped scallops have been very popular in more recent decades, in the US. I think they’re served at just about every catered wedding ;-)
Since we’re talking about store-bought Easter treats, Hubby is also a great fan of ‘Peeps”.
I remember seeing an article long ago, in the Martha Stewart magazine, on how to make homemade marshmallow Peeps. I thought at the time, “Why Bother?” - but it might be something for the ‘Prepper’ Thread :-)
This is actually an informative article on making ‘Marshmallow’:

GS Thin Mint! He’s not alone in that. A favorite here as well. Never eaten a Reeses’s Egg. only their PB CUPS.
LOL Speaking of Girl Scout Cookies. Suppose you read about the VSGS, the young entrepreneur who took her inventory outside a pot shop (California, Colorado??) and cleaned out of inventory in a matter of a few hours. Her competition crying unfair, she cheated! LOL The Girl Scout was one smart cookie! :-)
Soooo glad to see you JT!!!! You brought back the wonderful memories of the PAAS egg coloring kits. It was so much fun & then trying to balance the egg on the wire scoop they included in the kit.
I love white chocolate & so I always got a white chocolate bunny in my basket. You never realize how precious those memories will be when you get older.
I remember that. Smart young entrepreneur.
(She didn’t create the situation; she took clever advantage of it :-)
(You HAVE to eat a Reese’s Egg. The cups don’t compare :-)
At my grocery store, a few days after Easter you can buy all the leftover PAAS kits for pennies. I have a box full of them. (I am a ‘prepper’ of important Holiday stuff ;-)
(I used to love those big sugar eggs with the scenes inside of them. They don’t seem to make them so elaborately anymore.)
How is that cheating??? She should be awarded for her brilliance & obviously getting a tip from someone who gets stoned..... ; )
I bought plastic eggs to fill. I bought them after Easter last year when it all was marked down. We are having an egg hunt in the room. Everyone will also get an egg w/ their name on it with a $1.00 inside. They can buy ice cream next week. Getting pizza too & we will watch the original 101 Da!lmations. Fun!
Those sugar eggs ring a very vague bell. It’s like I’ve got the shimmer of it in my brain. Man, it’s great to see you & your wonderful thread!
Wow! Lots of work, but my son who makes marshmallows from scratch would probably try them. He says once you eat a real marshmallow, Kraft no longer appeals.
They were sort of like this; but back in the 1950s, I remember them being horizontal, and bigger and fancier:

I seldom buy store brand products, but the Safeway brand pork sausage is excellent.
Will search the shelves this week.

Totally agree LC, one young lass knew her market and made use of her knowledge. For this one act a Top Notch College of “Higher Learning” should offer her a scholarship.
Her competition, they deserve only a “She tried” trophy; once received, went home with their inventory and ate all the cookies :-) (just pulling your leg, but they were despondent)
Bummer! I detest hardboiled eggs, bourbon/whiskey and oysters. ;o(
Snark.............
We were travelling by boat with some friends years ago through the Florida panhandle and were waylaid for repairs for a few weeks. We stayed at a marina in a little town there called Carrabelle. They had a small factory stand that produced fresh shucked Apalachicola Bay oysters and sold them for $6 a quart! My husband, who does like them, ate his fill. I usually had to leave the room when they chowed down....just can’t get past the texture and the taste did not make up for it.
I’ll have to try it! I’ve never had a ‘S’More’, and it would be nice to try with a REAL marshmallow.
Id been curious about scotch eggs for awhile, we finally tried them last night (restaurant, not homemade). They were good.
