Arm us teachers, but with pepper spray (barf alert)
Dallas News ^ | 3/26/2018 | Marti Harvey

I'm all for arming teachers, but not with guns.

Arm teachers with key chain pepper spray containers.

You may have seen them. They're about the size of a lipstick; they attach to a purse, key chain, backpack or belt; and they come in cute colors. They can shoot streams up to 12 feet and fill a room with noxious gas in nothing flat. They require little training. And they don't usually kill people.(snip)

A key chain pepper spray container could be at my fingertips. I could use it within seconds.

Even if a gun was accessible, who would be willing to use it? Possibly against a current or former student? I don't know that I can answer that question, and, quite frankly, I don't want to have to find out.

Never bring pepper spray to a gun fight.

Not so sure I’d want to charge a rifle down a hallway with some pepper spray. Pass.

Uh, I think the range of a gun is a bit more than the range of a pepper spray canister.

I’m the furthest thing from a gun expert but I’m guessing a rifle has a longer range than pepper spray :)

"Even if a gun was accessible, who would be willing to use it?"

Anyone but a moron.

And we don't need morons masquerading as school teachers!

Right. She can’t even conceive of the idea. Not even when a crazy person is trying to kill them all.

"Bear spray would be better than nothing."

We don't really have much of a problem with bears in our schools. Bears don't often carry rifles either.

Although I do of course support...

Guess this moron has never watched the show, “Cops”, where the suspect keeps coming after a face full of pepper spray. These so-called educators are just too damn stupid to even set foot on school grounds.

Pepper spray has a nasty habit of drifting back into the sprayer thus rendering the sprayer almost useless for a quick getaway in order to get out of the way of the impending counter response.

She’d probably have the pepper spray facing the wrong way, and spray herself, anyway.

Actually, as someone who has a concealed carry license, it is a good idea in addition to carrying a lethal weapon, to also carry a “less-lethal” weapon such as pepper spray or taser.

I have been taught that I should only use my concealed carry weapon, when my life (or the life/safety of another) is in danger and that a “reasonable man” would feel that lethal force s the only option. In all other situations, a less lethal weapon is more appropriate.

For teachers, I feel solid training in the laws regarding the use of lethal force is necessary before they are allowed to carry in a school. I also would favor that they be armed both with a lethal weapon and a “less lethal weapon”, such as pepper spray.

So the idiot on the TV is only half wrong depending on your perspective.

Ms. Harvey, let's get one thing straight. Nobody, I repeat, NOBODY has suggested 'arming teachers.' Never, not once.

What has been proposed over and over again is to end the practice of DISARMING teachers at the schoolhouse doors.

There won't be a "break glass in case of school shooting" cabinet in the hallway with an AR. Instead, teachers, administrators, even janitors, who already have concealed licenses and practice the habit of carrying a firearm concealed with them when they are out among the community, will be offered the option of remaining armed when they enter the classroom.

Those who choose not to exercise their Second Amendment rights will never be forced to carry a gun in school, nor will the schools be passing out Glocks along with the keys to the Faculty Lounge to all of the first year new hires.

Only those individuals who volunteer to arm themselves, and to undergo additional training if the school administration deems it appropriate, will be carrying guns.

The rest of you can simply ignore the few faculty that are providing you with protection.
