The world is descending into tyranny
It wasn’t supposed to happen this way. After the Soviet Union’s collapse in 1991, democracy was supposed to be irresistible. While some of us were more skeptical than others, even cynics allowed that freedom seemed to have the upper hand.
Instead, barely a quarter-century along, democracy and political freedoms are newly embattled, as one society after another defaults to reborn tyranny, striding behind religious extremism, xenophobic nationalism — or both.
On Sunday, Vladimir Putin was re-elected as Russia’s president with almost 77 percent of the vote. With his relentlessly propagandized image at home, Putin would have won a free election, but that wouldn’t have been enough: He feels the need of an unassailable mandate, of recognition as his country’s savior. So serious opposition candidates were excluded (and one murdered), while ballot box stuffing was shameless. Czars are just that way.

Tyranny is the worst form of government, but societies are drawn to it like gravity. It takes constant effort to thwart it.

Democracy is an odious form of governance on par with the others. It only redemption is that it restrains with civic ropes, and a metaphorical crown on every man’s head, the desire to dominate the whole by an individual and his clique, by fustrating the paved and marked road to tyranny with millions of people voting in their self-interest or in coalitions that check the amassment of absolute power from any faction.
And in that it doesn’t work that well, that often, or for very long.
But it results in the fewest deaths over political differences, so it is the best we have, considering the alternatives.

Ralph needs to study human history more carefully. Empires rise and they fall. I also note that Ralph hates Donald Trump, who seems to be one of the few American leaders who is trying to keep the USA from going bust.
