The revived XFL wont be the only alternative football league hoping to seize Americans attention.
Charlie Ebersol, the son of longtime NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol and director of the 30 for 30 documentary about the original XFL his father created with WWEs Vince McMahon, announced Tuesday that he plans to launch a football league next February. (ESPNs Darren Rovell has all the details.)
The league is called the Alliance of American Football and will feature eight 50-man teams playing a 10-game schedule that begins on February 9, the Saturday after next years Super Bowl.
Funding for the league comes from the Peter Thiel-led Founders Fund, Barstool Sports investors the Chernin Group, former Vikings pass rusher Jared Allen and others.

“Yep, football fans will be sick of football. Everybody is still going to watch the NFL. If they go head to head at the beginning of the season their “Superbowl” will be during the regular season of the NFL.”
There are millions, like myself who have principals and honor who no longer watch NFL. It will be refreshing to watch professional football who are not anti American.
You’re basing your pint on those who lack principal and honor and support the anti American NFL. They do not matter.
They are already PC-ing the rules. No kickoffs. Ball will be put in play on the 25 yard line. That is not encouraging.
Don’t kick off? WTF? And what’s with this 25-yard line business. Most quarterbacks can throw 50 yards now. Why don’t they just start at the freaking 50.
2 groups of also rans stocked with washouts. Great, spread the lack of talent even thinner. Meanwhile FOX has ponied up to put the NFL draft on broadcast TV for the first time.
If they went head to head at the beginning of the season that mean competing with the NFL AND the NCAA in football, and also the end of the baseball season. Nobody would watch them then either.
The fact is these leagues are born dead. I watched one XFL game the last time around out of morbid curiosity. And I barely made it through the whole game, the talent just wasn’t there.
Every time I see the NBA ... I start to dribble. I would rather watch paint dry than watch Ni ... basketball
I give it two years.
It's tough market. The NFL has got generations of fan loyalty...not to the NFL but to teams. If they could convince a few whole teams to move to a new league they would have a shot. Probably the NFL contracts don't allow that...for example even if you took all the players and coaches from the Detroit Lions the NFL probably wouldn't let you call them the Detroit Lions.
They’re franchises, not individual companies. So yeah, there’s no taking the name or the logo, they’re all part of the NFL.
Hey what’s up Paesano? :)
