Ringo Starr receives knighthood: 'I'll wear it at breakfast'

The Duke of Cambridge bestowed the honour on the Liverpool-born star at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

"It means a lot actually," the musician told the BBC. "It means recognition for the things we've done. I was really pleased to accept this."

The honour comes 53 years after the Beatles were all awarded the MBE - and Starr said he had missed his bandmates' companionship this time round.

"I was a bit shaky today on my own," he said.

Asked whether he wanted to be known as Sir Ringo, the musician, whose real name is Richard Starkey, replied: "I don't know yet. It's new and I don't know how you use it properly."

Turning to BBC reporter Colin Paterson, he added: "But I expect you to use it."

The 77-year-old added he knew exactly what he'd do with his medal.

"I'll be wearing it at breakfast," he joked.

His honour comes 21 years after fellow Beatle Paul McCartney was knighted.

Starr said the pair had met for dinner last week in Los Angeles, and Sir Paul had offered him some advice for the ceremony: "Keep smiling."

Other people receiving honours at Tuesday's ceremony included authors Jilly Cooper and Michael Morpurgo, former Scottish rugby player John "Ian" McLauchlan, Welsh rugby player Sam Warburton and foster carer Anne Shaw.

Yoko Ono was the cause of the Band’s break up - she totally sucked, both as a singer and a human being. Hard to believe John latched on to such a wretched woman. Then again, without Paul’s lyrical brilliance, John would have gone nowhere. Paul proved himself the master lyricist when he formed Wings.

I had Sargent Peppers playing the other day and still get chills when I hear "She's Leaving Home."

Yoko was hideous. The Beatles (Paul does anyway) truly understood music composition.

John cared for her for many reasons. One main one is that she was already recognized as an ‘artist’ on her own and another is that she was utterly unimpressed with his wealth and fame (being from *VERY* wealthy family, just below and interrelated with that of the Emperor’s, IIRC). I imagine that was pleasant after years of being fawned over by women more in love with ‘ a Beatle’ than the person themselves.

The Beatles learned a lot from George Martin, Paul soaked it all up like a sponge.

Clean living, no drugs, and not chasing women will do that for you.

A few years ago, when my daughter was getting ready to leave for college, I played that song, and I broke down, something about that song really hit home for me.

AFAIK, only citizens of Commonwealth Realm countries (e.g., Canada, Australia, etc.), not colonies, can be knighted and be called "Sir". So Barky probably loses out there.

Now, that's not to say that the idiot media in the USA won't ignore this little detail and refer to him as "Sir Barack" - you can goldamnguarantee it'll be the case when he comes to cross his legs lady-style on "The View"

What I like about Ringo is his utter humility, and yet he was far and away the most professional and accomplished of the bunch when they started; he was already gigging regularly as a pro while they were just forming the band.

Not flashy, but he always spent the time necessary to get a great drum tone (not at all easy) and played exactly what was right for the song (and sometimes very creative things), rather than showing off his chops (which were much better than most people ever heard, but again, not a ‘keith Moon’ type of drummer.

Nice that Barbara Bach is now ‘Lady Starkey’, and they’ve been married 37 years, a pretty significant accomplishment I’d say.

He’s held up quite well, all things considered.
Still has hair on his head, though a bit less of it,
and still standing.

Exactly. Ringo may not have been the best drummer, but he was the best drummer for The Beatles.

How is this man still alive?

He attributes it to only taking "high-quality" drugs.

“Artist?!”
Have you ever heard her “sing?” - Good Lord! She sounds like she gargled with razor blades and kerosene. As for example: “Don’t Worry” - If you can listen to that torturous screech all the way through, you’re a better man than I.

Listen to the harp in the beginning.
I also love the chorus, with it’s long whole notes.
