The fall of Canton was part of the Second Opium War. China's humiliating defeat led to several changes, the most important of which was the legalization of the opium trade, which made Gladstone furious. He felt history would eventually condemn Britain's action, which indeed it has.
Another consequence was ceding the maritime territory east of the Ussuri River to Russia, which led to the founding of Vladivostok.
Also, Kowloon was ceded to Britain to be part of the Hong Kong crown colony.
As you can see from the article, the American attitude at the time was generally supportive of Britain. Another consequence of the war was the transportation of Chinese indentured servants to America in British ships.

The US got some trade concessions from China as a result of the Opium War.
This year also marks the centennial of our little-known war with Paraguay.

Regarding the Bleeding Kansas excerpt, the letter from Charles Robinson mentioned in the second paragraph was written on this date.

I have mentioned it before but in the “future” the Robinson family will donate land just west of “present day” Lawrence to help found the University of Kansas. Rock, chalk, Jayhawk!

Would that we were half as passionate about defending our freedom as Samuel Walker and Co. were.
We need that kind of passion against the tyranny of the Delusional Lying Left to recover our country.
