A teacher in New Jersey who was standing outside on bus duty was reportedly struck by lightning on Wednesday during a severe spat of “thundersnow.”

The woman was on patrol at Manchester Township Middle School in Manchester Township when the rare weather phenomenon broke out in the region around 2:30 p.m., according to NBC 10.

I have been in a snow storm with Thunder at 7,000 feet. Doubt that it is rare.

“Thundersnow” is a blizzard thing. Nobody is out in a blizzard, so nobody gets hit.

Move over “Sharknado” there is a new franchise headed for the big screen. Not sure of the title yet but I do like “Thunder Snow”. Throw in some giant frozen fish sticks flying through the air and I feel a series of hit movies is in the making.

I was driving on I-84 & I-15 along the Idaho/Utah border some years back at night and there was a VERY active snow storm with thunder and lightning. WOW! The snow really magnified the lightning.

Pretty slim considering how rare thundersnow is.

No, actually it's not just in blizzards.

It happens regularly, but not often, in lake effect snow.

It will be snowing at a decent rate but the winds which categorize the storm as a blizzard are not the factor in producing thundersnow.

I used to live east of Pocatello, ID at 6000 ft. elevation and experienced several Thundersnow storms. The first one was the most memorable because I’d never heard of such a phenomenon previously. The plain old summertime thunderstorms at that elevation were pretty impressive too. They sure make you seek shelter in a big hurry!

We’ve had thundersnow for about as long as we’ve had snow - experienced it a few times when growing up around Rochester, NY - just not part of the average snow event.
