As yellow fever spreads toward big cities, Brazil struggles to vaccinate millions
L A Times ^

With air mattresses and beach chairs tucked under their arms, they began arriving as early as midnight, lining up down the sidewalk and around the corner in downtown Sao Paulo, Brazil.

"Make sure you have your vaccination card and your number in hand," a public health clinic worker shouted to those lucky enough to have one of the 300 numbers that would allow them to receive a full dose of the yellow fever vaccine, good for a lifetime.

...

Though the surge has largely been in rural areas, there is increasing concern that if people don't get the vaccine, the virus could spread into the country's biggest cities.

Those lined up on the January morning in Sao Paulo were also racing against the clock. The Brazilian government, faced with the task of vaccinating millions as quickly as possible, said it would begin reducing vaccine doses in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro by the end of January to help stretch supplies.

Though health officials insisted even a partial dose would protect people for up to eight years, many remained unconvinced.

"Why would I only want only part of a vaccination?" asked Isabel Antonia Martins, who waited in line that day. "We don't know if it will have the same effect as a full dose. I'm not taking any chances, especially with the way yellow fever has been spreading."

Coming soon to the US as more and more infected “immigrants” arrive in the US with diseases which had been cleared from the US a century ago.

Watch for a rebirth of TB, yellow fever, malaria, etc. , because we don’t screen the “undocumented” any longer.

“The real problem, according to Nogueira, isn’t the vaccine, but the government’s lack of transparency.”

Money quote of the story.

Infectious Disease - Yellow Fever Virus ( Brazil - partial vaccination (?))

The Brazilian government, faced with the task of vaccinating millions as quickly as possible, said it would begin reducing vaccine doses
in Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro by the end of January to help stretch supplies.
Though health officials insisted even a partial dose would protect people for up to eight years, many remained unconvinced.

With all the "undocumented" coming across the border, it would just be a mater of time before it shows up here.
My own limited education suggests that this partial vaccine approach is a 'half-a$$ed', and would present opportunity for possible massive disease 'break-throughs'.
The Flavivirus which causes yellow fever, and it's transmitted when an infected mosquito bites you.

I invite comments from all FReepers ..

I share your concern..
It's too bad we can't reestablish another Ellis Island concept
to deter illnesses from coming into the country,
and to medically evaluate and treat those while in trnasit.

Apparently yellow fever vaccine is the smartest vaccine choice of all vaccines if exposed. Meaning weighing the risks of the vaccine vs the chances of survival from the disease, get the vaccine.

Below quote is from a site that does not recommend the hep A or typhoid vaxxes before travel as the side effects are worse than the cures.

“Though the risk of contracting yellow fever is quite small – especially for travelers, up to 90% of non-immunized travelers that are infected with yellow fever will die. Studies of the vaccine indicate efficacy from 75-95%, and while serious side effects have been reported, they are rare.”

See my post. A lot of vaccines are worse than the disease but not yellow fever. I’d get it. Actually I got it already at 17, don’t know if I’m still covered.

I have a friend who thinks one tetanus shot will probably protect a person for a lifetime. But he also says it’s not worth risking because the disease is so horrible and the ‘prevention’ so easy and safe. So the medical community tells people a tetanus shot is only good for ten years. They don’t know.. and no one wants to risk finding out if it’s good for longer ...

metmom :" Is this a tropical climate disease? "

It is,.. for now !
However, it is spread by infected mosquitoes, so..
it can be spread anywhere mosquitoes inhabit.
Let's not forget that the species mosquitoes carrying Zika virus
were found as far north as three blocks from the White House, I believe they were in a bird bath.
That is why it is so important to get a handle on the disease while still regionalized, currently in Brazil.
