With three northern white rhinos left in the world, the only male is gravely ill, raising fears the subspecies is getting closer to extinction.
Sudan made headlines last year when the Tinder dating app named him the most eligible bachelor in the world in a campaign to raise funds to save the subspecies.
At 45, considered elderly in rhino years, the animal lives at the Ol Pejeta Conservancy in Kenya with two female northern white rhinos Fatu and Najin. They are the last three northern white rhinos.

Raising fears? It seems to me a foregone conclusion. If these are the only 3, there extinction is absolutely imminent and can be forecasts on calendar. Are people unsure if the two females can perpetuate the species without a male?
Why yes, of course can they can. Its what US college campuses and parts of the media have declared. Its our new science
Recently a documentary subject on PBS’s Nature (pbs.org/nature)
Subspecies. Is that more restrictive than “breed?” I mean, are white rhinocerii (sp?) more different from the common black kind than St. Bernards are from Chihuauas?
“Are people unsure if the two females can perpetuate the species without a male? “
Well, DNA and Chromosome 23 in humans are completely denied, and we are now told that men can get pregnant and menstruate and that women can father children.
So maybe one of the rhinos identifies as male?
Already done ;-) They have his sperm and embryos from other white rhinos in storage. They would do in vitro to another sub-species of rhino that is a close cousin.
No more powdered rhino horn! How will old Chinamen get it up now?
Dr Pol will do it
McCain?
Will they need to show him some rhino porn first?
I was curious too. There’s actually a Southern White Rhino that is plentiful only a country or two away, but according to what I remember of my biology classes, they are sufficiently different to be a sub-species. Mayr and Ashlock (1991:43): A subspecies is an aggregate of phenotypically similar populations of a species inhabiting a geographic subdivision of the range of that species and differing taxonomically from other populations of that species.
Hope that clears it up ;-) A sub-species is more differentiated than a “breed”. For instance, dogs originated from domesticated wolves, but there is less genetic variation between dog breeds than between wolves even if different breeds look so different.
Well, Barbra Streisand has proven that cloning works, let’s clone some of these up! Better use of technology than her stupid yappy mutts.
He looks pretty horny to me. Maybe he can make one final effort for the sake of the species.
Mid-term elections.
He has the distinct bad luck to be the last of his kind on a deathwatch, but since he's the last, the zoo vets won't put him down.
It's science - ask any liberal. If one of the females identifies as a male, then they will be able to perpetuate the species. How they feel about themselves is more important than the trivial DNA and anatomical details conservatives seem to fixate upon.
O, I thought this was a John McCain post too...
