A couple of years before she died, she told me that her industry had gotten the whole diet thing wrong for years.
Too many breads, cakes, cookies, chips, pasta and potatoes and not enough meats and fats and fresh, unprocessed carbs like salad veggies.
Eat like a lean cave-man would and not like the refined, carb rich-cuisine of the city-dwellers.
Good advice.
Great for you!
Thank you for a wonderful start to the day.
Keep on truckin’
Yep, we took a wrong turn about 40 or 50 years ago. Time to right the error.
Good for you. I went at it pretty steady after I read the book but have slacked off some. So I intermittent fast...well...intermittently. I’m trying to get back on the horse and stay on.
I will check that out. Thanks for the heads up.
Right, the difference between a diabetic diet and keto as I understand it is that on a diabetic diet your just keeping your insulin relatively low and somewhat constant. No? Nothing too drastic, just making sure your carb intake is quite moderate.
On keto, you are going past that and restricting carbs enough to pull the metabolism out of glycogenesis and forcing it to produce ketones from lipids.
The dietary changes seem similar, but the metabolic difference is significant.
You got it.
The nice thing is that my flavor is fat.
I like gravy on food. (Use to like it on biscuits but no more.) And last year I went for the full treat on Thanksgiving, took a week to get back on keto.
I think that is not only tolerated but probably allows for staying on the diet longer.

I cheat every so often, like the big piece of my 70th birthday cake I usually don't indulge in. I savored every bite of it.
But I go right back to the low carb way of eating.
I don't refer to this way of eating as a diet. Sounds too challenging.
I just say it is the way I eat now versus the way I used to eat.
Probably fewer than remember this guy.
And, a great help for those following the keto diet - even better than MyFitnessPal, is Cronometer.
It will calculate your macros for you on the keto diet, and will also track all your micronutrients. It is free to check out and use. There is a paid version, but the free version works just fine.
That is probably a good way to look at it.
If I want to control my blood sugar (and in my case it also helps control my resting heart rate due to a-fib) then I have to consider that this is the way it is and will continue to be.
Basically, I will have it for the rest of my life, taking Warfarin to keep the blood thin. Otherwise, it doesn't bother me.
It seems to target the heart, which needs magnesium.
Here is an example: https://www.pureformulas.com/magnesium-orotate-360mg-100-capsules-by-priority-one.html
Best.
Thanks for the reply.
I have had 4 procedures, none worked for long and blood thinners gave me two brain bleeds. I had a clamp put on the sack on the atrium the last procedure and it is supposed to help keep the risk of blood clots down. I did get a clot when I was taking a testosterone supplement so I had to stop that too. The good news— with this diet my heart rate (on meds to slow it down) is under control. I have a kardia device and monitor it. My doctor would be pleased with the most recent results. So I just have to live with it too. Good luck FRiend.

It also helps to know how many carbs you can eat and still remain in ketosis. $10 for a bottle of pee sticks is a good investment.

Those indicators are pretty useless... generally when you’re in the “adapting” phase you’ll see a spike because your body is throwing out ketones in the urine... after you’re adapted you will generally show a small amount only no matter what your blood ketone level is.
I don't have any overt symptoms of a-fib that bother me but I do have to travel every month to the VA for my INR lab draw.
And so we live with it. This getting old shit is getting old. :-)
How often do you fast? I’ve seen this work to keep the A1C held in check. I also read an article reporting a study that supports this resetting strategy very well. It suggested a 3 to 5 day semi-fast of no more than 1000 calories of very low carb meals each 3 to 6 months as I recall. I saved the article and would need to find it to be certain.
The first step in getting something done is to start.
If I thought my doctor would take actions to confine me for even 72 minutes I’d be finding another doctor.
I fast when I can, which comes out to around once per month. I’m not sure anything short of water-fasting (black coffee is ok too) will have the same effect, but that’s getting out of my league.
As to finding a doctor, it’s not worth the trouble for me to hunt around for one that will accept my lifestyle. I figure humans have been dealing without eating for days much longer than they’ve been trying to convince their bodies that 3 meals every day is a good thing - so screw it, my doctor doesn’t need to be involved.
You know it.
My wife thinks they don’t know as much about a-fib as they pretend. But the blood thinner experience almost did me in. No more of them ever.
Take care my friend.
