An ex-con disarmed a gunman in a Texas church. Then ‘the good guys shot me’

When a man with a handgun walked into a church service at the Faith City Mission in Amarillo, Texas, most of the crowd of about 100 started to run.

But Tony Garces, an ex-con, took his shirt off and confronted the gunman, according to a news release from Amarillo police.

After Garces wrestled the gun away from 35-year-old Joshua Len Jones, and helped prevent what could have been another mass shooting on the same day as the school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., at least one Amarillo police officer shot Garces. He was hit twice, in the chest and neck, but he told KVII he’d do it again “in a heartbeat.”

“I got the gun,” Garces told the station. “I thought it was over. But the cops, they shot me. The good guys shot me.”

Thank God Tony Garces acted, but beyond his brave act, from info in this article, hard to untangle right from wrong after that point.

Bravery and poor judgement are not mutually exclusive.

Icing on the cake would be to charge him with unlawful possession of a firearm. But this is Texas. NE states would lock him up for a couple of years regardless of his act of bravery.

If police arrive and see that you’ve just disarmed an attacker and tell you to “throw” the handgun on the floor, don’t hesitate in the confusion! Or they’ll kill you! Throw it on the floor, hard, so they can kill you for throwing it and making it go off!

Better yet, simply run or hide from any bad situation that develops, like the rest of our population is doing. In case you haven’t noticed from the policies of today, it’s them against you. Don’t talk to them or anyone who says anything negative about government. Hide. Be quiet. Don’t say anything controversial on your phone or on the Net. Don’t access anything on the Net that can be used against you in a report. Don’t do anything that most other people aren’t doing. Spend plenty of money on entertainment and toys. They’re watching you.

LOL! I’ll watch the insanity from here and let all of the kooks and retards wipe each other out on the highways, in churches and everywhere.

Taking his shirt off was a prison-learned behavior.

If you are fortunate enough to wrest the gun from somebody, when the police enter the room, they are going to see you holding a gun.

When you got the gun, put it in your pocket if the guy is still a threat. If the guy is not a threat, put the gun down. When the police roll up, your only job is to look as harmless as possible and follow directions.

Common among criminals to show how tough they are.

I would peg a guy with out a shirt among a bunch of wearing the shirt as the bad guy.

Sounds like he was thinking more clearly than the cops.

Another reason to support an armed citizenry is that when people deal with their own problems on the spot and call the cops later there’s less to worry about than from some high strung police arriving during the action or 15 minutes late and not knowing who is who.

Shirtless without disgusting obesity or wrinkled scrawniness: capital crime, punishable on sight.

This one’s for young men.

Get in good shape. Get a couple of girls who are friends, and take them to a middle class neighborhood full of management folks. Dress like day laborer. Take your shirt off while walking down the street and flexing your muscles, and have the girls follow you like drooling, excited puppies. Then watch the fun, as the neighborhood begins to riot.

;-)

> Why would he take off his shirt?

Have you ever held the barrel of a recently fired gun?
It will burn you. He needed to use his shirt to take the gun and not get burned.

"Why would he take off his shirt?"

To show off his bull's eye tattoos?

In this type of situation, the cops will shoot you regardless of whether you comply with their orders or not.

You have the gun, you are the threat, and the quickest way to neutralize the threat is to shoot him.

Absolutely true! Police officers are involved in far more mistaken shootings and accidental discharges than armed citizens acting in self defense. An armed citizen - whether carrying the gun himself or having taken it from an assailant, knows what has happened and who’s responsible. An officer arriving after the fact is attempting to determine what’s happened very quickly and is far more prone to mistakes. That being said, when a police officer tells you to drop a/your weapon, put the damned thing down - now.

He should have dodged the slow handgun bullets the police were lobbing at him.

Well played, sir.

I’d say he took off the shirt to show the prison tattoos. Could give some guys a reason to pause out of emotion, recognition, or maybe fear if it was some cowardly type. Probably a good idea actually. Demonstrated to the guy that he might not be the backing down type could cause lesser types to turn and flee.

Brave dude. Hope he’s ok. He was actually probably more cool than those amped up cops. I agree with his assessment of dropping or throwing the gun. Not a good idea generally...much better to very slowly lay it on the ground, but lots of cops won’t realize that.
