Jennifer Lawrence: I don't regret dropping out of middle school

Jennifer Lawrence is a lot of things — Oscar winner, advocate, and Emma Stone’s biggest fan, among others — but one thing she’s not? A high school graduate.

In a preview of Sunday’s episode of 60 Minutes, Lawrence, 27, opens up about her decision to forgo an education in her hometown of Louisville, Kentucky, for a career in Hollywood.

“I struggled through school. I never felt very smart,” says Lawrence, whose new spy thriller Red Sparrow (in theaters March 2) finds her playing a Russian intelligence officer who makes heartbreaking sacrifices at a young age. “And when I’m reading this script, and I feel like I know exactly what it would look like if somebody felt that way. That was a whole part of my brain that I didn’t even know existed — something that I could be confident in, and I didn’t want to let it go.”

“What was it you wanted so much?” asks CBS News correspondent Bill Whitaker.

“It’s hard to explain. It’s just an overwhelming feeling of, ‘I get this. This is what I was meant to do,'” Lawrence says of acting. “And to get people to try to understand that when you’re 14 years old, wanting to drop out of school and do this, and your parents are just like, ‘You’re out of your mind.'”

But her parents listened to Lawrence’s instincts. “I dropped out of middle school. I don’t technically have a GED or a diploma,” she says with a smile. “I am self-educated.”

Whitaker asks if she regrets the decision. “No,” says Lawrence. “I really don’t. I wanted to forge my own path. I found what I wanted to do, and I didn’t want anything getting in the way of it. Even friends, for many years, were not as important to me as my career, I mean, from the age of 14.”

Always outspoken, Lawrence recently slammed disgraced movie mogul Harvey Weinstein for mentioning her name as a defense in his legal battles as he faces the fallout over multiple sexual misconduct allegations leveled against him. “Harvey Weinstein and his company are continuing to do what they have always done which is to take things out of context and use them for their own benefit,” Lawrence said in a statement released Thursday. “This is what predators do, and it must stop.”

And on Wednesday, Lawrence lashed out at critics of her decision to wear a revealing Versace dress while promoting Red Sparrow in London, calling their comments “sexist” and “ridiculous.”

60 Minutes airs Sundays at 7 p.m. ET/PT on CBS. Watch a preview above.

“Her net worth is estimated to be $45-$75 mil.”

For only 5 to 10% of that I will tutor her and make sure she gets her GED and a bachelors degree.

In any case, she’ll lose it all because she can’t read a contract and her attorney, accountant, and agent will each take a 33% cut.

Yeah, she got into the gender equity dispute when she found out she earned significantly less than her male co-stars in American Hustle. Yet it is society's fault for her lack of negotiating skill.

Red Sparrow was a great book. I won’t support the movie with Lawrence. The Jack Reacher books are some of the best, but putting a pu$$y in the lead like Tom Cruise and its easier to read the book again.

Why should she. She makes 12 millionplus a movie and a high school degree gets you nowhere. I think she’s smarter then the rest of us who have masters degrees and making 125,000 a year. We are the dumb ones.

Some of the comments just go to show us that people who learned what they know from public schools are much like bands of monkeys.

Yes-but look at what happens to actresses-with a few exceptions-they have an expiration date where leading lady status is concerned-and if they haven’t made excellent investments they will have to accept lesser roles or find something else to do-not a lot of related professions are open to someone without even a GED. I’m a firm believer in a decent education, no matter who you are-that isn’t “stupid”-and neither am I-there is no need to be rude...

Like I said, “That’s life”, and it isn’t always “fair.” And while I find it frustrating, I’m not blaming anyone or asking anyone to make it “fair”. Which is what makes it doubly onerous when some empty-headed buffoon like Jennifer Lawrence, who happens to have wealth and fame, thinks it is her right to tell anyone else pretty much anything about what they should think or how they should live.

I don’t think she is all that talented, but she is easy on the eyes, and banks on that.

Someone said they didn’t think she was stupid because she didn’t receive schooling past the eighth grade. I agree.

I think she is stupid because she is an extreme and vocal leftist. That brings her grades way up in the stupid category.

I think she exhibits brilliance in some areas of the vast diversity of intelligences. But she’s chosen to make a few really dumb movies lately.
