FULL TITLE: One THIRD of millennials only brush their teeth once a day - and most Americans would rather go without sex for a month than see a dentist, study reveals

One third of millennials only brush their teeth once a day, according to a new study.

Even in adulthood, the research revealed that Americans can be neglectful of their oral hygiene, with 62 percent reporting that they were too scared to go to the dentist.

Skipping the ritual sounds harmless enough, but going without brushing and flossing has been linked to health risks ranging from gum disease to dementia and even erectile dysfunction.

The study, conducted by market research company OnePoll and commissioned by a toothpaste brand, adds to recent work that has identified startling links between oral hygiene and income disparity and overall health in the US.

I know people do but I hadn’t heard it was a requirement.

I'm a baby boomer. We were never taught to brush multiple times a day. I don't think I was even aware of flossing until the 1970s.

And who are the Brits to be lecturing us about dental hygiene, of all things? They're famous for having the worst teeth in the developed world.

I hate the dentist and only go every 3 or so years. And, every time I go, they give me a lecture about how I need to come in every 6 months, then are amazed at how clean my teeth are and how healthy my gums are.

Good job!

Thorough brushing for at least one full minute and up to three minutes, (licking every surface of every tooth to make sure they are clean and not fuzzy), followed by flossing and then another brush and rinse, plus proper diet, avoiding sugary foods and drinks, using sipping straws, brushing the tongue, weekly brush/rinses with peroxide and baking soda for whitening, toothpicks after every meal and occasional home scaling with a tiny blade can keep all one's teeth in great shape for long periods of time.

Seniors need to avoid chewing or biting down on hard candy, ice cubes, nuts, or taffy to keep their fillings, crowns and the corners of their molars intact.

Check references carefully of any dentist if you have to choose a new one.

Other things that help start in childhood: getting the tops of the molars sealed has helped my offspring avoid the cavities that we of earlier generations got. And if the teeth are misaligned, having braces as a youngster to straighten them will help the teeth last a lifetime. Food doesn't get caught in them as easily, they don't loosen as readily with age and they are more easily cleaned if they are aligned properly.

When I was working in an office in Switzerland I noticed that every other woman headed to the bathroom after lunch with their toothbrushes. They brushed three times a day. They had the worst teeth. I did not brush after lunch and I had zero cavities and nice straight teeth.

Brushing teeth surfaces is a fine thing to do, commercial toothpaste is crap and fluoride is toxic. But for true teeth health flossing plays an important part in keeping gums free of bad bacteria, but the most important thing for dental health is diet.

Eating enough minerals and getting enough important animal and seafood fats for vitamin k helps keep strong teeth for life.

I use only baking soda as well. Absolutely the best.

This is me! They lecture me because I avoid fluoride but they rave about my great teeth! Shuddup already!
