Aluminium oxynitride or AlON is a ceramic composed of aluminium, oxygen and nitrogen. It is marketed under the name ALON by Surmet Corporation. AlON is optically transparent (≥80%) in the near-ultraviolet, visible and midwave-infrared regions of the electromagnetic spectrum. It is 4 times harder than fused silica glass, 85% as hard as sapphire, and nearly 15% harder than magnesium aluminate spinel. Since it has a cubic spinel structure, it can be fabricated to transparent windows, plates, domes, rods, tubes and other forms using conventional ceramic powder processing techniques. ALON is the hardest polycrystalline transparent ceramic available commercially. Combination of optical and mechanical properties makes this material a leading candidate for lightweight high-performance transparent armor applications such as bulletproof and blast-resistant windows and for many military infrared optics. AlON-based armor has been shown to stop multiple armor-piercing projectiles of up to 50 cal. It is commercially available in sizes as big as 18x35-inch monolithic windows.

Nice images of the ISS cupola. After all these years it will be interesting to see if it can be replaced and what the procedure will be. Last time they redeployed a segment of the ISS was moving the port solar array from the Z1 truss to the P3 truss. You might say they got a few kinks along the way.

Metals are made out of minerals.
Sounds like it would be good to use in smart phones.
#17. Scotty- “Do you want to be rich beyond your wildest dreams?”
“Transparent aluminum” - guaranteed TWO WHALES STRONG.
What a great movie and Katherine Hicks wasn’t bad either.
Well, I guess that’s where you get the advertising slogan, “I can hear you clearly now”.
Johnny Nash foresaw this development in his song “I can see clearly now” back in 1972. Should have been the movie “Star Trek: The Journey Home” theme song.
Has Dr. Nichols cashed in on in his find, yet ?
not now, Madilyn!
It managed to be entertaining and amusing, still fit the Star Trek arc of the time, and the environutso agenda wasn't distracting. They could easily have stopped making Original Cast movies after that, AFAIC. "LDS?"
Actually, this has been around for several years. Good stuff.
Cool for canning

I've always been able to go transparent... any time I want.
I just love it when Bendy... goes all clear!
Yay!
This was a gift to us from The Aliens. The same ones that gave us Velcro. Be sure to thank them next time you put on your shoes.
You beat me to it. Cue Scotty: “How do we know he didn’t invent the stuff?”
