Bradie Tennell fell. Mirai Nagasu fell. Karen Chen had to put her hand down on the ice to stop herself from falling. Three American skaters. Three errors they likely wont be able to recover from here at the Olympics short program Wednesday. Im mad, said Nagasu, who is ninth place. Im upset. I am not going to lie, I am pretty disappointed in myself, said Chen, who is in 10th. Were all human, said Tennell, who is in 11th. We make mistakes. The United States hasnt won a medal in ladies figure skating since 2006, when Sasha Cohen took silver. Barring a miraculous comeback, that streak will extend to 2022 in Beijing. Its a major fall from grace for U.S. Figure Skating, which was once an international powerhouse.

The USOC is more interested in sending a team that “Looks Like America” than in winning medals.
Well, to put it succinctly, it stinks. On ice.
If this keeps up, parents are going to steer their kids towards professional careers instead of leaving them with athletic coaches, trainers and predators for hours everyday. Maybe this is how professional sports ends and people start having fun with sports again, instead of wasting their lives, chasing something only the elite attain, whose lives turn into a total waste.
You said it ... they stink on ice ...
“We are not sending our best”
Good read, and just as I speculated on a thread a few days ago, it is now confirmed. The Pence hating 10th Place finisher yet Media Star of the Olympics Adam Rippon didn’t skate his way onto the Team he was voted onto it. He place 4th at the Nationals which is off the Team, but the US Skating Committee booted off the 2nd place finisher for Rippon.
And the US Men’s Bobsled team had a guy named “Hakeem” on it.
New and inexperienced.
This was actually the worst performance by American women in figure skating since the inception of the winter olympics in 1924.
We’ve always finished at least 6th or higher.
Maybe one of the three ladies can still pull us up to a higher spot after the free skate. But we’re not going to be on the podium and haven’t been since 2006.
Go see I, Tonya if you want to know what’s missing.
I lived through that whole episode. A marker for Generation Xers.
The U.S. has historically done well in the Olympics because competitive international athletics are primarily a luxury entertainment commodity for affluent people in rich countries. The U.S. has been, by far, the biggest of the rich countries and the richest of the big countries. That is the sweet spot for winning lots of medals.
As the rest of the world progresses economically, the U.S. dominance will continue to erode. Two important secondary variables are whether a given country has a strong sports culture and whether it values women's athletics. The U.S. can answer yes on both counts. That is, again, the sweet spot for winning medals, but is also something that will erode over time as other countries develop.
There are still many countries whose "plan" for developing top athletes is to send them to college in the U.S. College coaches in the U.S. are happy to oblige. And that's fine. But people should recognize that with four percent of the world's population, the U.S. in the long run should be winning four percent of the Olympic medals. Television, of course, will drop the Olympic Games long before we reach that point because most Americans will not tune in to watch foreigners excel at sports we don't take seriously and in which Americans aren't a factor.
Figure skating. Overhype...oooohhhh...just did a double lutz...triple axel...toe pointed slightly wrong directiion...oh...i’m crushed...
Make 'em shoot targets in the middle like in Biathlon, and I might be impressed.
Exactly why I like curling, anyone can do it at minimal expense, a true amateur sport.
The commentators are terrible. Bitchy, arrogant and back-biting is the woman commentator and the queer guy is all over the place. It is way too much the commentators and not enough of the actual competition.
Scott Hamilton upstairs at the main desk is good, as always, but the rest of the clowns are really driving the coverage in the toilet. The fat black guy that fauns over the Gay Skater is enough to make me puck. He was doing everything he could to see if he could get that guy into political controversy in every interview.
Makes you want to watch ice hockey?
They were more focused on their ‘causes’ and fame rather than their skating. MSM has ruined the Olympics.
The only thing worse than being forced to watch ice skating and ice dancing with your wife is listening to the comments of the poofter as it is performed.
There are many factors and the most amazing thing about this Winter Olympics is that Norway, a nation of 5.3 million (smaller than the average US state), is almost running away with the medal wins. Especially with the Winter Olympics, I think the climate and availability of snow and ice is one of the most important factors, along with the popularity of the sport and how many other sports compete for the young people’s interest.
All the teams near the top of the medal standings come from nations that have been wealthy for at least a century or two.
