Classical Music’s White Male Supremacy is Overt, Pervasive, and a Problem (Barf Alert)
Scapi Magazine ^ | 2/18/2018 | DANIEL JOHANSON

Over the week, there have been waves of backlash at The Metropolitan Opera’s newest season announcement. A recent Washington Post made the rounds, taking to task the institution’s insistence on an entirely white and male composer list, as well as a completely male roster of conductors taking the podium.

As a white man, there have been and continue to be countless times in which I have needed to recognize that privilege, white supremacy, homophobia, toxic masculinity, and gender normativity are layered issues. It’s easy to call a Nazi a racist because they are so obviously a racist. Not all racists are willing to take up that mantle.

Recognizing that Classical Music has implied White Supremacy for centuries is hard for those that study the art form. In fact, that correlating The Met’s continued programming of dead white men to the rise of White Supremacist tendencies in America is not a far stretch is starting to become apparent to those that follow and review the company’s season announcements.

Of course Italian Opera traditions are rich and are the backbone for many composers, but when an American institution, founded on the grounds of Natives and whose nation’s economy was fueled by the labor of slavery continues in 2018 to program exclusively white men, there’s a message being sent to those who don’t fall into that category.

“You need to prove yourself extraordinary, so work harder and watch your step.”

Good jazz inspired the Blues and other decent genres. Bad jazz inspired hip-hop and other trash. There are those who don’t appreciate the difference between good jazz and awful jazz.

I would venture to guess that ghetto rap music is highly under represented by Caucasian “stars”.

And when a white does start doing ghetto rap, it is then labeled as "cultural appropriation." Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Kathleen Battle could switch from opera singing to hip hop and rap music. I doubt she will.

>Also I read somewhere that if a store plays classical music like Mozart or Beethoven’s, it can effectively prevent blacks from loitering around your store.

Our local public library had the loitering problem and put up outdoor speakers at the front entrance. Crowds are down substantially. The only problem is that if I hear something I like and I don’t have SoundHound or Shazam with me there’s nobody on the staff that can tell me exactly what is playing.

As one of my children said “Have you ever noticed Jazz concerts are free?”

I am a classics fan with little bit of Country and Pop. Jazz is a disorganized sound. It messes with our brain in a negative way IMO.

Listen to the andante movement Mozart’s Concerto 21 and educate your brain. Then tell us what you think about Jazz and Mozart.

Probably not, but I’ve recently discovered that several classically trained sopranos are singing lead in heavy metal bands and the result is actually quite spectacular.

May I suggest something like this amazing performance...

NIGHTWISH - Ghost Love Score (OFFICIAL LIVE)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4V_eoR6r1Tw or

20 OF THE BEST SOPRANOS IN METAL

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63L99voumg0

The Metropolitan Opera, the Cleveland Orchestra or any world class cultural institution exists because the public pays to enjoy their performances and the money thus generated pays the rent of the facilities and salaries of the musicians. The PUBLIC who consumes the performances WANTS the music of old dead white men. If somebody comes along and disagrees with that premise then I suggest they start their own opera or orchestra and perform whatever works you consider relevant in your world view. Methinks you will go broke posthaste. In the end it’s totally up to the consumer.

taking to task the institution’s insistence on an entirely white and male composer list, as well as a completely male roster of conductors taking the podium.

The idea is for it to be good ... right?

I don’t have to. Classical is the best genre of music bar none. You can see its influence in every other decent genre out there, including country, pop, spiritual and jazz— when the jazz is performed by a master versus some pretender whom your child is talking about . . . who might as well be tuning up their instrument.

I don't know about conductors but Pretty Yende is the star of L'Elisir at the Metropolitan Opera this season. And she'll be back for Lucia later in the season. She's really delightful.
This is her fourth season at the Met, I think.

I just love this interview she did just before her Met debut.

Olga Kern performs the conclusion of Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto - it's all about merit - those who have the skills to compose and perform, compose and perform - those who don't, write articles about how unfair it all is - but when you're listening to classical music it's impossible to tell what the sex or race of the artists involved are, only how good the music is......

The Asians will keep Classical music alive. They live a lifestyle that’s much closer to the way White people used to live than how most White people live today. It’s no wonder they have an appreciation for legitimate “high art”.
