WASHINGTON The National Portrait Gallery will unveil official portraits of former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle on Monday with the art world wondering how they will be portrayed by the noted African-American artists they selected to portray them.
Obama, the nations first African-American president, selected Kehinde Wiley; Mrs. Obama picked Amy Sherald. Both artists are known for their painting of African-Americans.
Wiley and Sherald are the first African-Americans to be commissioned by the gallery to paint official portraits.
The gallery, part of the Smithsonian Institution, has the only complete collection of presidential portraits outside of the White House.
Obamas portrait will be installed in the Americas Presidents gallery and Mrs. Obamas picture will be on display in another part of the museum.
Both Obama and Mrs. Obama will attend the event, to be livestreamed by the portrait gallery starting at 9 a.m. Chicago time.
The National Gallery began commissioning presidential portraits in 1994, starting with President George H.W. Bush. The initial first lady commission was in 2006 with Hillary Clinton.

Both of us had “American” mothers . . .
WHAT DOES THAT MEAN????
LOL! Love it!
Also looks just like something a high-schooler with a modicum of drawing talent would turn out.
...and the paintings are terrible, too.
That isn’t the real portrait is it?
It is. Par for the course, with that one.
That would be a great place to arrest Hussein Obama for releasing top secret drone technology to the Iranians who reverse engineered a captured drone but the muslim in the WH wouldn’t order an air strike against a fellow muslim country to destroy the captured drone.
The cash infusion of $1.7B in cash on pallets insured the development of Iran’s clone drone.
These Presidential Portraits are supposed to be “Life like” portraits...not some artists free for all.
It was their choice and they wanted to elevate artists they admire. What’s the problem with that? Obama at least chose someone who could paint his likeness but who sat him in the bushes. Mrs Obama chose poorly for both the likeness and focus part.

What’s wrong with that is that they didn’t choose the artists solely based on their work, but on their skin color - and that’s called racism.
