Lewis and Clarke mentioned they heard “loud booms like 12# cannons” a couple of times in their journals.
IMHO I believe it to be the sound waves from very shallow stress relieving forces reaching the surface. I believe NE Wisconsin experienced similar sounds a couple of years ago.

Through 2017 there were at least 64 locations worldwide that experienced unusual booms. The majority in the US happened East of the Mississippi. Each assigned it own explanation by local “experts”. Icequakes, aliens, meteors, DUMBs, fighter jets, CERN, underground gas explosions, continental shelf shift, and Gabriels Horns, are just some of the explanations offered.

No booms here, but when I go to the bathroom, my wife says she hears alot of screaming.
Everything comes out all right in the end though.
