From the article:

After appearances in a handful of 1950s B-movies, Gavin's breakthrough came in 1958 when he landed the lead role of a World War II German soldier in "A Time to Love and a Time to Die."
The film was based on an Erich Maria Remarque novel, and Universal Studios, having won an Academy Award in 1930 with its adaptation of Remarque's "All Quiet on the Western Front," was hoping lightning would strike again.

With a postwar audience hungering for escapism, however, it didn't happen and neither the film nor its leading man fared well with critics.

'cept "The Bridge on the River Kwai" won a bazillion academy awards to include best picture.

RIP John Gavin.

His second wife, Constance Towers is still acting.
She started in 1952, played Hannah Hunter in the 1959 John Wayne movie Horse Soldiers and played the retired librarian
Sadie Dunhill in 11.22.63. She was also in General Hospital from 1997 to 2017 as Helena Cassadine. An
acting career spanning 65 years. No mean feat.

Breathtakingly handsome, a critical thinker, and politically savvy. Quite a combination.

Article left out a fascinating bit of trivia about Mr. Gavin’s acting career. In 1970, he was signed to play British secret agent James Bond in “Diamonds Are Forever” and would in fact have become the 3rd James Bond if Sean Connery hadn’t agreed to reprise the role at the last minute:
