Ellen Pompeo became the highest-paid actress on a TV drama in January, signing a two-year extension with Greys Anatomy for a whopping $575,000 per episode.
Pompeo revealed her $20 million payday to The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month, but now tells Jimmy Kimmel she came forward about her big salary to teach other women a lesson.
As women, you know, its not only about whats done to us or whats not given to us. Its what dont we ask for, the 48-year-old told Kimmel.
I think that as much as we can point the finger at other people and [say], You dont give us or you dont treat us fairly, we also have to point the finger at ourselves and say, Did we ask? Did we step up and have the, uh, gumption, to ask for what a man would?

UH-OH.... the shmear campaign begins now.
Grey’s Anatomy is still on??
I still cannot believe that crappy boring show is worth big bucks.
Her show is based on the premise of a fashion model who joined the working world, and gets all sort of “unequal treatment” .. Going both ways.
Well, at least it used to be. It changed plot pretty quickly because no one was interested.
Grays Anatomy?!!! Is that still on? Didnt that start in the 80s?
I didn’t know who Ellen Pompeo was until I just checked her photo. Never watched the show.
A couple of thoughts, as a man:
At pretty much every job I've held, I of course wanted to be paid more.
Sure, I could "ask", but in medicine you are paid for your value. What you bring to the table?
I could "ask" to be paid at the same rate as a cardiovascular surgeon, but I'm a humble internal medicine specialist, so guess what would happen?
You'll be paid for the value an internist brings.
Want more than that?
Become a CV surgeon.
Yes, I *get* that Hollywood is fantasy land.
But unless you are Jennifer Lawrence, you'll be paid at Ellen Pompeo rates.
Which, by the way is probably a tidy sum, even for what would be an "equivalent" male actor.
Spare me the tears.
Not everyone gets Tom Cruise money, even if they are better actors.
Asking for more money works more often than you think. I got my base pay raised 10k and bonus + stock 5k and an extra week of vacation from first job offer when I changed companies three years ago.
I tried to watch this show—it is boring, stupid, and every ridiculous p.c. trick in the book is shoved at the viewer: 50% of the cast is black, 60% of the cast is gay or bisexual, there’s two lesbians and a turkey baster baby, 90% of the cast are sluts, fornicating with everyone while on the job, etc.
I think youve got your shows confused. Greys Anatomy is a medical drama. I have not watched in years because it got so boring.
Oh, no no confusion.
The first season was about her coming from modelling (She was featured in magazines) and back into medicine. Some people didn’t take her seriously, others just thought of her as a sex symbol (ew gross!)
I recall the show. I watched it with my ex.
She is guilty of Heresy Against Doctrine! Who does she think she is?! Any wrong done against any woman is the fault of all men! She must be sent to a Hollywood Reeducation Camp immediately! [/sarc]
Haha. Well I certainly didnt remember that. Gosh, its been forever. I thought Izzy was the ex model and Meredith was following trepidatiously in her mothers footsteps as a doctor. I doubt I go back and watch again to refresh my memory. ;)
