Full title: REVIEW Clint Eastwood’s “15:17 to Paris” Is An Eclectic Mix of Patriotic, Christian, and Cutting Edge — And Will Resonate in the Heartland
***

Don’t believe the mixed or bad reviews coming in early for Clint Eastwood’s “15:17 to Paris.” I saw it tonight, and like A.O. Scott in the New York Times, I found it fascinating and much more complicated than a snarky dismissal.

You know, I’m Jewish and liberal, so “patriotic” and “Christian” aren’t two of the things I warm to in movies necessarily. But Eastwood’s take on these real life heroes is not simplistic. The real life people playing themselves as heroes on the train from Amsterdam to Paris– I was braced for a bad movie. And I will say, it starts slowly and it’s totally not what you expect. Nevertheless, if you’re patient with it, you quickly realize several things.

First of, the real guys are not bad. I’ve seen worse. Compared to Louis CK’s unreleased “I Love You, Daddy,” the acting and writing here is Shakespearean.

Second, Eastwood– as he did in “American Sniper” and “Sully”– lays out their stories and backgrounds objectively. I’m already seeing in some reviews some idea that Eastwood is pushing a religious agenda or whatever. Nonsense. He’s accurately depicting these people. The mothers of the guys are religious– this is what they believe, it’s their right. No one is mocking them or judging them. This is who they are. And kudos to Jenna Fischer and Judy Greer for finding the mothers’ dimensions.

I’ll see it. I’d rather give my money to patriotic Americans like Clint than POS crap like Black Panther etc.

I enjoyed Gran Torino a lot...so much so that I might give this one a try when the DVD hits my library. Then,if I like it,I'll probably buy it on bluray.

I was sitting there the other night, trying to imagine a bad Clint Eastwood movie, and I don’t there is such a thing. Generally, if he directs...it’s worth watching.

I can’t wait to see this. I love Clint Eastwood films and this was a big risk but it was pure genius

Negroes are telling Caucasians to stay away from the Black Panther movie. For once I agree with them.

me too. Gran Torino was a gem. I like Sully a lot, even though I hate the lefty Tom Hanks.

I think for the last 10 years the most brilliant and creative stuff coming out of Hollywood has been the films from Clint Eastwood. In addition to others already listed on this thread, he directed a movie about 8 or 9 years ago which was about the battle of Iwo Jima from the Japanese point of view and it was a masterpiece.

Heartbreak Ridge. I recommended to my wife that we watch it just a couple of weekends ago. I’d seen it a long time ago (probably in the theater in the 80’s when it was released) but she had never seen it. We both like Eastwood’s movies so it was an easy choice.

I hate to be argumentative on this since I really do like Eastwood’s work, but, this one didn’t age well. I loved Clint’s character and he has some priceless phrases and one-liners in there but the movie was a bit of a mess. It seemed to try and ride the line between a John Hughes comedy and a war movie. It didn’t work well for me. Just my opinion of course.

I definitely do plan on seeing this new movie in the theater.

“No one is mocking them”

Probably what the “tolerant” pinkos hate about it.

Clint is a superb filmmaker . Also helps that he is one of the few remaining good guys in Hollywood.

I’m looking forward to this
