This occurs on Pensacola beach as well, thought the light is greenish.
Spectacular.
Outer Banks, too - not so that the whole expanse of water glows, but they twinkle like stars falling in the surf at night.
We had huge bioluminescence in Ventura this last summer. It was the most Ive ever seen. If you stomped on the docks it looked like blue fireworks in the water. The waves on the beaches were spectacular.
Very nice.
I remember one summer in Maine, in a boat at night in Frenchman’s Bay, near Bar Harbor. We saw a similar phenomenon. When the boat disturbed the water, it glowed a faint blue.
When the surf crashes.
Not exactly St Elmos Fire, but very cool.
The wonders of the world.
One of my fondest memories growing up on the Banks...watching the stars in the surf. Add some female company and liquid libation, and stir....
Until they develop a taste for human flesh.....
I used to love to swim in it out there, until I learned that sharks ID’ed prey by the glow of the water disturbance. Bad idea to be in the ocean in low light period. It was stunning though, like liquid Disney pixie dust.
I was brown bear hunting on Afognak Island in Alaska during the springtime. We had rented a floating cabin that was anchored in a slough. One evening after my 4th or 5th can of barley pop I went outside to relieve myself over the side. As my borrowed beer hit the water it started to sparkle. At first I thought it might have been from all those drugs I took in college but then I realized it was bioluminescence from plankton in the water. That was so cool I had to go back in and rehydrate myself so I could watch it again!
I haven’t been back in quite a while, but went often when I was younger. It’s a beautiful region, and very much it’s OWN place.
Which part? I’ve long loved Hatteras and Ocracoke but went up to Currituck to the 4x4 beach up above Corolla for the first time this past summer and loved it. Rented a house for a week set back in the dunes and live oaks at North Swan Beach, although most people collectively call the whole place Carova Beach. So wild and free, got a kick out of driving back in the dunes. The wild horses running loose were pretty but got old after I nearly walked into one taking the garbage out one night. Cold water compared to the southern end, but that was OK it makes for a nice breeze, not that into ocean swimming anymore, more of a wader now, lol.
Uh ... yeah. Good excuse. I'll have to use that one on my wife.
I LOVE Big Sur!
Phosphorescent Bay in Puerto Rico. 1980. We were out in a small boat it was like being in a Disney movie. Light dripping off your oars and when anything skimmed the surface trails of light.
My dad was in the merchant service in the ‘20s and ‘30s. One night in the Indian Ocean he was on deck and saw what looked like spokes of a giant wheel afar off slowly rotating, sweeping across the ship. He called out another deck officer and they agreed it was plankton reacting to the sound of the ship’s engines. Never saw anything like that again.
Had that happened today, it would be a segment of “Ancient Aliens”.
Kewl.
in Vieques?
