I haven’t been back in quite a while, but went often when I was younger. It’s a beautiful region, and very much it’s OWN place.
Which part? I’ve long loved Hatteras and Ocracoke but went up to Currituck to the 4x4 beach up above Corolla for the first time this past summer and loved it. Rented a house for a week set back in the dunes and live oaks at North Swan Beach, although most people collectively call the whole place Carova Beach. So wild and free, got a kick out of driving back in the dunes. The wild horses running loose were pretty but got old after I nearly walked into one taking the garbage out one night. Cold water compared to the southern end, but that was OK it makes for a nice breeze, not that into ocean swimming anymore, more of a wader now, lol.
