Red Famine: Stalin's War on Ukraine
Amazon ^ | 2017 | Anne Applebaum

Posted on 02/03/2018 2:27:44 PM PST by GoldenState_Rose

In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization—in effect a second Russian revolution—which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem. In Red Famine, Anne Applebaum argues that more than three million of those dead were Ukrainians who perished not because they were accidental victims of a bad policy but because the state deliberately set out to kill them.

Applebaum proves what has long been suspected: after a series of rebellions unsettled the province, Stalin set out to destroy the Ukrainian peasantry. The state sealed the republic’s borders and seized all available food. Starvation set in rapidly, and people ate anything: grass, tree bark, dogs, corpses. In some cases, they killed one another for food. Devastating and definitive, Red Famine captures the horror of ordinary people struggling to survive extraordinary evil.

Read the author’s book on the Gulag. Interesting but it’s history so nobody cares.

The NYT suppressed that, did they not?
In the interests of propagating marxism, of course.
Because, journalists are smarter.
(Than just about nobody.)

“And how we burned in the camps later, thinking: What would things have been like if every Security operative, when he went out at night to make an arrest, had been uncertain whether he would return alive and had to say good-bye to his family? Or if, during periods of mass arrests, as for example in Leningrad, when they arrested a quarter of the entire city, people had not simply sat there in their lairs, paling with terror at every bang of the downstairs door and at every step on the staircase, but had understood they had nothing left to lose and had boldly set up in the downstairs hall an ambush of half a dozen people with axes, hammers, pokers, or whatever else was at hand?... The Organs would very quickly have suffered a shortage of officers and transport and, notwithstanding all of Stalin’s thirst, the cursed machine would have ground to a halt! If...if...We didn’t love freedom enough. And even more – we had no awareness of the real situation.... We purely and simply deserved everything that happened afterward.”

The NYT didn’t merely suppress or not report the famine story, they put out a series of propaganda stories “debunking” it as myth, written by their long-time Moscow bureau chief Walter Duranty. Soviet handlers toured Duranty around Ukraine, and just by luck he was shown Potemkin villages of well-fed peasants, played by communist police, during the height of the famine. He was an easy sell, and reported that all those famine stories were just capitalist propaganda. To the best of my knowledge, the NYT did not admit fault until many decades later, and Duranty never apologized for being 100% wrong. Things never change.

Woof, Dawg Brother...

Communists starving innocent people, who just want to be left alone...

That’s what happens when you can’t and don’t shoot the m*therf*ckers in the face.

Stalin made Hitler look like a rank amateur when it comes to body counts.

International Socialist versus National Socialist - when the boot is one your face, it doesn’t matter. You shoot the wearer in HIS face to make him remove it.

There’s no coexistence with people that want to subjugate you.

I have her book “Gulag” and it bears reading more than once. European and Russian histories interest me greatly, and not just since 1900 — as far back as written history can be found.
