Weekly Cooking (and related issues) Thread

Posted on 02/01/2018 3:07:23 PM PST by Jamestown1630

When we came home tonight, my husband smelled cooking coming from a neighbor’s place, and said it reminded him of a childhood favorite, Tuna Noodle Casserole. He hasn’t made it in a long time, but grew up on a recipe that used the typical canned-soup approach.

On the food network site, Pioneer Woman Ree Drummond has a from-scratch recipe that looks a lot better:

http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/ree-drummond/tuna-noodle-casserole-3634226

Another recipe from prepared items that we used to make was Corned Beef Hash, using canned corn beef and mashed potatoes. But if you are having corned beef for St. Patrick’s day, here’s a more interesting recipe for your leftovers, from the Happy Money Saver site:

When we eventually get our first dog, that is exactly what we will do. Get a hybrid breed, to avoid the genetic inbreeding of purebreds yet still USF the predictability with looks, behavior, and demeanor. Kind of falling in love with the cavapoochon.

We’ve never had a problem with indoor male cats not using the litter box. It’s all in their ‘Mama’ training; and having them ‘fixed’ helps a lot.

The male cat I had as a child was raised as an outdoor cat; he had no idea what a litter box was. But most cats who are raised to the litter box from the get-go do very well, unless something major happens in their environment/experience to alienate them from the box. Cats can ‘act-out’ just like kids sometimes do.

He just thought it sounded like a food allergy. Actually corduroy did act exactly the same way as cotton did when I started noticing her grain allergy. There’s no other food that Roy acts like that with, just the SO. And he loves it! That’s the pity.

lol!

I took my semi-feral cat to the vet for shots and stuff, he is 15, never had his teeth cleaned either professionally or with my brushing them, and she said he was just fine. Whereas my little Yorkie Had to have four teeth pulled and he was only seven. I brush my silver Persians teeth every other day and scrape the tartar from them but they have still lost a couple teeth anyway.

I mentioned all that and she said Max, the mutt cat, had a variety of good genes. She must see the difference all the time.

That said, I know I would get another Yorky again in a heartbeat. There’s nothing like knowing what the personaly is going to be like when you get a puppy. And when I get one it’s for life. And I just love how affectionate they are. Almost too much so, I feel guilty leaving the house without him. I just have to find a reputable breeder. He’s been pretty healthy except for those teeth.

Okay...THAT is cuteness overload! We’re a cat family but if we ever went canine, this would be on the list. Can they be litter box trained? ;o)

It’s my pleasure. (As you can see, sometimes it veers away from cooking ;-)

I know, right? The potty thing is why I kept having kids and not getting dogs. Kids do get potty trained eventually!

Oh my gosh, the last two males we had. The one was half Maine coon (son of Popoki) and the other was a lazy bum of a Tonkinese who acted very doggy. I would see them go to the door and gaze out, and not even open their mouths to ask to have it opened, and wait a millisecond and before I could get there, pee on the wall. Both of them were forever leaving little surprises on the bottoms of furniture or walls. (Pee only) that was when we let cats out doors for potty.

We’re expecting some snow here today, so Tomato Soup and Grilled Cheese is going to be the perfect lunch!

Now...what should we have first for breakfast? It’s always about the next meal with me. ;)

Yes, the wet vs. dry feeding in cats in a big issue in the Vet world. Many think dry feeding leads to obesity in cats.

Other issue is hyperthyroidism in older cats. We have 2/5 of our cats diagnosed with it, and on medication. My husband( a Vet) said they didn’t even study this in Vet school and now it appears to be a major problem.

My 5 seniors are all feral rescues as well. They adapted well to living indoors.

Lovely cat CottonBall! So wish I had light colored wood on my floors as the dark shows up all the dog and cat hair!

I think I’ve made everyone of these over the years! Hubby likes the Italian meatballs and I like the cabbage roll casserole.

thanks pugmama . I gather from your name you have some of those dogs that have the smooshed face, like my Persian cats? ;)

Actually those floors are tile! They’re just made to look like wood. We figured with all the rain and mud here, and our outdoor living lifestyle traipsing in and out all the time, tile would hold up much better. It’s funny though, when you go to Home Depot and look at tile the majority of it now looks like wood!

It is cold though so we’re thinking of putting real wood in the bedrooms. Nothing beats the feel and look of real hardwood. I’m thinking of going dark, since that looks the most elegant. But I hadn’t thought about the hair issue! Thanks for bringing that up.

We had a Maine Coon that tipped the scales at 31 pounds at his heaviest. Big-boned beastie, but he DID like his food. He was down to a reasonable 15ish when he died.
